What Pratipada Shraddha Is

Pitru Paksha is the fortnight in which Hindu families remember the people they came from. The tradition holds that the pitrs draw near during these days, and that food and water offered with care reaches them.

Each day of the fortnight belongs to a tithi. The shraddha for a departed family member is performed on the tithi on which they died, regardless of the calendar month. Pratipada Shraddha is therefore for those whose ancestors passed on Pratipada tithi.

It carries a second role as well. In many traditions Pratipada is the day for maternal grandparents, the nana and nani, whose shraddha would not otherwise fall to the family. If you do not know the tithi of a departed relative, that offering is made on Sarva Pitru Amavasya at the end of the fortnight instead.

The Three Muhurats, and Why Shraddha Is Never Done in the Morning

This is the part most people get wrong. A shraddha belongs to the second half of the day. The forenoon belongs to the devas; the afternoon belongs to the pitrs.

Kutup Muhurat is the first and most auspicious window, beginning at solar midday. If you can only manage one part of the ritual, this is where the tarpan goes.

Rohina Muhurat follows immediately and carries nearly equal weight. In practice Kutup and Rohina are treated as one continuous window, which on 27 September gives you from 11:46 AM to 01:22 PM.

Aparahna Kaal is the longer closing window and is when the pind daan and the feeding are traditionally completed. A shraddha finished after Aparahna ends is considered late.

27 September 2026 is a Sunday, which is a genuine gift here. The whole sequence sits inside the middle of a weekend day, so UAE families can keep it properly without taking leave.

Pitru Paksha 2026: All Sixteen Days

Find the tithi your family observes and mark that date. Note that Tritiya and Chaturthi Shraddha share 29 September this year, which happens when a tithi is short.

The Tarpan Vidhi

What follows is the household form, the one a family performs without a priest. Where a full pind daan with a pandit is intended, the sequence is longer and is best arranged in advance.

1. Bathe and wear clean, simple clothes. White or undyed cotton is traditional. Nothing new, nothing celebratory.
2. Wear the pavitri, a ring of kusha grass, on the ring finger of the right hand. Kusha is what makes the offering fit to be received.
3. Sit facing south. South is the direction of the pitrs, and it is the one detail people most often miss.
4. Fill a vessel with clean water and add black til. A little gangajal may be added to the water.
5. Take the sankalp inside the Kutup Muhurat, naming the ancestor and the tithi.
6. Offer the water through the pitru tirtha, the part of the palm between the thumb and the index finger, letting it fall over the fingertips rather than the palm edge. This is the specific gesture that distinguishes tarpan from any other water offering.
7. Chant Om Pitru Devaya Namah as you pour, or the family's own tarpan mantra if you have one.
8. Prepare food that the departed liked. Kheer, rice and ghee are the usual base. A portion is set aside before anyone eats.
9. Offer that portion to a crow, a cow and a dog if you can, then feed a brahmin or someone in need. In practice the feeding of a person is the part that carries the day.

Keeping Pitru Paksha in the UAE

The obvious difficulty is that there is no river. Tarpan is described as an offering made standing in flowing water, and almost nobody here can do that.

The accepted practice is to perform the tarpan at home into a wide vessel, then carry that water out and pour it at the base of a tree or into clean soil. A peepal or banyan is ideal where one is available. Do not pour it down a household drain. Several families in Dubai use a large plant pot kept for the purpose, which is entirely acceptable.

Crows are the other question we are asked every year. They are common enough in Dubai and Sharjah, and a portion left on a terrace or balcony ledge is usually taken. If no crow comes, the offering is not wasted. Set it out with the intention stated, and give the equivalent as food to a person.

That last point is worth sitting with. In a city where a large share of the Indian community works long hours for modest wages, feeding someone on a shraddha day is not a substitute for the ritual. It is the ritual, in the form the shastra actually asks for.

What Not to Do During Pitru Paksha

The fortnight is a period of restraint rather than mourning. Weddings, housewarmings, new vehicle purchases and other auspicious beginnings are traditionally postponed until it ends. Many families also avoid non vegetarian food, onion and garlic through the fortnight.

None of this is meant to make the household gloomy. The observance is one of gratitude, not grief, and it is kept in a calm and ordinary way.

Pitru Paksha closes on 10 October and Navratri begins the very next day, on 11 October. The turn from remembering the ancestors to invoking the Devi is deliberate, and the household cleaning done at the end of the fortnight is usually the start of the Navratri preparation.
