One detail matters more here than it does in India. Dubai sunrise on 17 September is 06:06 AM and the transit lands 22 minutes later, at 06:28. The observance opens the moment the sun is up. In Delhi that same transit sits almost two hours after sunrise, which is why advice written for India reads as far more relaxed than it actually is for us.

Only the sunrise itself shifts, by about five minutes across the country.

Why the Punya Kaal Is the Whole Point
A Sankranti is not a festival in the way Diwali or Navratri are. There is no ten day build up and no evening celebration. It is a single astronomical moment, and what matters is the window of time attached to it.
The tradition holds that sixteen ghatis after the Sankranti moment carry the merit, which is where the Punya Kaal comes from. Charity, bathing, tarpan and japa performed inside that window are said to carry many times the weight they would on an ordinary day. Outside the window, the day is simply a Thursday.
Two auspicious yogas, Sarvartha Siddhi and Ravi Yoga, run from sunrise to 06:23 PM in Dubai on this date, so the entire Punya Kaal sits inside both. There is no competing inauspicious window inside it either.
That is why the practical advice for Kanya Sankranti is unusually simple. Do the small things early. A bath, an arghya to Surya, and a considered act of daan before 08:31 AM is the whole observance.
What to Give: The Daan Tradition
Kanya Sankranti sits at the turn of the monsoon into the harvest, and the traditional daan reflects that. Til, gur, rice, seasonal vegetables and cloth are the classic offerings, given to a priest, to someone in need, or to a temple.
Til daan carries particular weight on a Sankranti. Black til is used where the intention involves the ancestors or Shani, white til where it is for general merit and prosperity. Gur is given alongside it, and the pair is often tied together in a small cloth potli.
This matters more than usual in 2026 because Pitru Paksha opens on 26 September with Purnima Shraddha, and Pratipada Shraddha follows on the 27th - nine days after this Sankranti. Many families buy their til once and use it across both, so Kanya Sankranti is the sensible moment to stock it.

Kanya Sankranti Puja Vidhi
- Rise before sunrise and bathe. A snan before the Sankranti moment is the traditional start, and adding a little gangajal to the water is the usual practice where a river bath is not possible.
- Wear clean clothes and face east as the sun rises.
- Offer arghya to Surya: fill a copper vessel with water, add a pinch of roli and a few grains of akshat and red flowers, and pour it slowly in a steady stream while facing the sun.
- Chant Om Suryaya Namah, or the Gayatri Mantra, while the water is poured. Twelve repetitions is the common count.
- Light a deepak and offer dhoop at the home mandir, then take the sankalp for the daan you intend to give.
- Complete the daan inside the Punya Kaal. Til, gur, rice, cloth or a cash offering, given without announcement, is the form.

The Same Day Is Also Vishwakarma Puja
Kanya Sankranti and Vishwakarma Puja fall together. Vishwakarma Puja is fixed by this solar transit rather than by a lunar tithi, which is why it lands on 16 or 17 September almost every year while festivals like Diwali move by weeks.
In practice most UAE households keep one or the other depending on where they are from and what they do for a living. Workshops, garages, engineering firms and IT teams mark Vishwakarma Puja. Families observing the solar calendar mark the Sankranti with snan and daan. Doing both on the same morning is common and entirely correct.

Regional Names for the Same Day
One point worth clearing up, because it is widely muddled online. Kanya Sankranti is not Pongal. Pongal and Makar Sankranti fall in January, when the sun enters Capricorn. This is the Virgo transit, six months apart.
In Kerala this day begins the month of Kanni. In Tamil Nadu it begins Purattasi, the month associated with Venkateswara worship and with Saturday vratams. In parts of Odisha and Bengal the day is kept primarily as Vishwakarma Puja. The solar moment is identical everywhere; only the calendar name and the emphasis change.

Keeping Kanya Sankranti in the UAE
The Punya Kaal is the practical problem here. 17 September 2026 is a Thursday, a full working day, and the Maha Punya Kaal closes at 08:31 AM. For most people in Dubai that means the observance has to happen before leaving home. If it cannot, the full Punya Kaal still runs to 01:00 PM, and Abhijit Muhurta at 11:49 AM to 12:38 PM sits neatly inside it - a lunch-break option that is still properly within the window.
This is genuinely workable. The bath, the arghya and the sankalp take fifteen minutes. The daan itself does not have to be handed over inside the window as long as the sankalp is taken there, so many families set the intention in the morning and make the actual offering at the temple in the evening.
The Hindu Temple in Jebel Ali opens at 06:00 AM and stays open until 8:30 PM, seven days a week. That is six minutes before sunrise and well before the Sankranti moment, so the entire Maha Punya Kaal falls inside its hours if you would rather do the arghya there than at home. It also means the evening handover of your daan is easy after work.
Several UAE charities run labour camp meal programmes that suit the spirit of a Sankranti offering well. Giving to workers is particularly apt on a day that is also Vishwakarma Puja. If you are giving later in the day rather than in the morning, Rahu Kalam on 17 September runs 01:46 PM to 03:17 PM, so most families avoid that stretch.
On sourcing, til and gur are the two things to order ahead. Both are easy to find in Karama and Bur Dubai in normal weeks, but the week of Sankranti runs into Pitru Paksha demand and the shelves thin out. If you are in Sharjah or Ajman, allow an extra day for delivery.

The full Punya Kaal runs to 01:00 PM, so the morning rush is not your only chance. Abhijit Muhurta falls 11:49 AM to 12:38 PM, inside that window, and is the natural fallback if you cannot manage anything before leaving for work. Past 01:00 PM, give the daan anyway. The window carries added merit, not exclusive merit, and an offering made sincerely later in the day is still an offering.
