Why 365 threads
Each thread stands for one day of the year. Daily diya lighting is one of the simplest acts of devotion and also one of the hardest to keep up through a busy year of work, school runs and travel. Tradition holds that when 365 wicks are lit together with devotion, the offering is received as a full year of daily lamps, including the evenings when the diya could not be lit.

When to light a 365 batti

How to light a 365 batti, step by step
- Choose a wide lamp. The dome is about 8 cm across on most batti, so it needs a wide, shallow diya, a large clay lamp or a brass plate with a rim. An everyday small diya is too narrow and will overflow.
- Stand the lamp on metal. Put the diya on a brass or steel thali. A 365 batti gets the lamp hotter than a single wick does.
- Seat the batti. Set it upright in the centre, stalk pointing straight up.
- Warm the ghee. Soft or melted ghee soaks in far better than cold ghee from the fridge. Sesame oil can be poured straight.
- Pour slowly over the dome. Keep pouring until the cotton stops drinking and turns evenly golden. It takes more than you expect, so keep the jar at hand.
- Leave a little pooled at the base so the batti keeps drawing oil as it burns.
- Light the central stalk with a lit diya or a piece of camphor, and offer your prayer.
Ghee or sesame oil?
Pure cow ghee is the most common choice and gives a clean, steady flame. Sesame oil, til oil, is the traditional alternative, especially in Telugu and Tamil homes, and it is what many families use for the 365 vattulu deepam on Karthika Pournami. How long does a 365 batti burn?
