How it comes to you

How to light it

1. Choose a wide, shallow diya or a brass plate. The batti needs room around it for oil.
2. Set the batti upright in the centre, stalk pointing up.
3. Pour warm ghee or sesame oil slowly over the dome until the cotton is soaked through. It takes more than you expect, so keep pouring until the cotton stops drinking.
4. Leave a little oil pooled around the base, then light the central stalk.
5. Stand the diya on brass, stone or a metal plate, since clay and metal get hot underneath.

A 365 batti burns as one broad flame, much bigger than an ordinary diya. Keep it well clear of curtains, cloth, paper and flowers, never leave it unattended, and keep children and pets at a distance.
