Your lamp-lighting window in Dubai is 5:11 PM to 6:53 PM. The moon rises at 5:11 and the Purnima tithi runs out at 6:53, so a little over an hour and a half covers moon darshan, the diyas and the aarti. Light early rather than late.
Indian panchangs will often print a different day for a festival like this, and the reason is simply the four-hour gap between IST and Gulf Standard Time. A tithi that begins at 11:42 PM in Delhi begins at 10:12 PM here, which occasionally pushes the whole observance back a day. What Kartik Purnima is
Kartik Purnima is the full moon of Kartika, the eighth month of the Hindu lunar year and the month Vaishnavas keep as Damodara masa. The whole month is spent in early baths, evening lamps and lighter food, and this full moon is where all of it lands. It carries several names because several traditions meet on the same night: Tripuri Purnima for the Shaivas, Dev Diwali for the lamps, Karthigai Deepam in the Tamil calendar and Guru Nanak Jayanti for Sikh families.
Tripuri Purnima and the three cities
The three sons of the asura Tarakasura won a boon that made them close to untouchable. They were given three flying cities, one of gold, one of silver and one of iron, and could only be destroyed by a single arrow fired at the one moment in a very long cycle when all three aligned. Shiva waited for that moment and took the shot. The cities came down together, and he has been called Tripurari, the enemy of the three cities, ever since.
The story is not really about the arrow. It is about the discipline of waiting for the right instant, which is the same idea the muhurat table above is built on.
Dev Diwali, the Diwali of the gods
After Tripura fell, the devas came down to earth to celebrate, and the night has been kept as Dev Diwali ever since. In Varanasi the entire riverfront is lined with earthen lamps and the ghats are worked step by step until the whole bank is lit. Small lamps go out onto the water in leaf boats.
Fifteen days after Diwali proper, this is the last lamp-lighting night of the season, and in most homes it is a quieter and more inward one.
Karthigai Deepam and Guru Nanak Jayanti
The same full moon carries the Krittika nakshatra, which is where the Tamil Karthigai Deepam observance sits, kept with rows of agal vilakku along the doorway. The 2026 date is also Guru Nanak Jayanti, so in a mixed UAE building you will find neighbours marking three different things on one evening. That overlap is worth knowing about before you knock on a door with prasad.
Bhishma Panchaka, and which end it starts at
Bhishma Panchaka is the five-day fast that closes Kartika, kept in Vaishnava households in memory of Bhishma on his bed of arrows. It is easy to get the direction wrong, and plenty of pages do.
It begins on Prabodhini Ekadashi, Friday 20 November 2026, and ends on Kartik Purnima, Tuesday 24 November. Five days, forward, closing on the full moon. Not the other way round.
Vaikuntha Chaturdashi, the night before
Vaikuntha Chaturdashi falls on Monday 23 November 2026, the day before the full moon. The story behind it has Vishnu worshipping Shiva with a thousand lotuses, finding one flower short, and offering his own eye in its place. Shiva stopped him and gave him the Sudarshana chakra. It is the day Shaivas and Vaishnavas keep together, and families who worship one usually light a lamp for the other on this night.
Kartik snan, the holy dip
The snan is the oldest part of this month. Devotees bathe before sunrise for the whole of Kartika, and the practice begins on Sharad Purnima rather than on this day, so by Kartik Purnima it is the thirtieth morning, not the first. The full moon bath is simply the last and largest one.
Nobody in the UAE is stepping into the Ganga at 5 AM. What travels is the intention rather than the river: an early bath, a few drops of holy water in it, and the same hour kept as you would keep it at home.

How to observe Kartik Purnima at home in the UAE
No ghat, a working day and a flat on the eleventh floor. None of that is an obstacle. Here is the version that fits an ordinary UAE Tuesday.
- Bathe early and keep it short. Before sunrise if you can manage it, which is 6:42 AM. A few drops of Gangajal in the bucket carries the whole idea of the snan.
- Keep the fast the way your body allows. Most families keep a phalahar fast, fruit and milk, from dawn until the moon is seen. If you are working, water and fruit through the day is the sensible reading, not a heroic one.
- Chant through the day. A round on a tulsi mala at your desk works as well as an hour on the mat. Om Namah Shivaya for Tripurari, Om Namo Narayanaya for Damodara. Both belong to this night.
- Light the diyas as the moon rises. From 5:11 PM. Along the shelf, on a thali, at the balcony rail. An odd number is traditional and eleven is a common choice.
- Do the aarti before 6:53 PM. That is when the tithi ends. Offer tulsi, a fruit, something sweet.
- Give something away. Daan is the part of this festival most often skipped and most often remembered. Food to a labour camp collection, a meal shared with the watchman, clothes to a drive. Small and actual beats large and intended.
