A larger hand-painted clay diya, 8 cm across and 2.5 cm deep, in deep red with a gold scroll rim and a lotus pressed into the bowl. Buy it on its own, as a Set of 6 or as a Set of 12. It holds more oil than our everyday 6 cm diya, so the flame stays lit longer, and it ships from our Ajman warehouse with fast delivery across the UAE.

Which pack do you need

  • Single - the centre diya for the pooja thali, or a statement lamp beside the mandir.
  • Set of 6 - the mandir shelf, the entrance and a pair for the balcony.
  • Set of 12 - a full lighting for a flat on Diwali night, with the larger lamps at the door and the pooja room.

About the diya

Each diya is moulded from natural clay with a raised lotus inside the bowl and a channel that runs from the centre to the spout, where the wick rests. The rim carries a band of curling scrollwork, and the gold is brushed on by hand over the red. Because it is painted by hand, a little red shows through the gold here and there, and no two pieces are identical.

At 8 cm it is a size up from the standard mitti diya. That extra width gives a deeper pool of oil or ghee for one wick, which is why the larger diya is the one families tend to keep for the Lakshmi Puja thali and the main mandir, and the smaller ones for lining ledges and railings.

How to light it

Fill the bowl with ghee, sesame oil or mustard oil, lay a cotton wick along the channel so the tip rests on the spout, and light the tip. Cotton wicks are sold separately in our Rui Batti listing. Keep lit diyas on a stable, heat-safe surface and well away from curtains and dupattas.

After the festival, let the diya cool, wipe out the leftover oil with a soft dry cloth and store it wrapped in paper. Handled gently, it will come out again next year.

Diwali in the UAE

Most families in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ajman celebrate Diwali in flats and villas, where the doorway, the pooja corner and the balcony do the work a courtyard wall would do back home. Those few spots are where a bigger diya earns its place, because it reads clearly from across the room.

Pair a few of these with a set of our hand-painted 6 cm clay diyas for the ledges and railings, or browse the full Diwali Specials collection for the rest of your Lakshmi Puja. The Set of 12 clears our AED 30 free UAE delivery threshold on its own.

Known across the community as mitti diya, agal vilakku, vilakku and deepam, this is the lamp that welcomes Lakshmi ji into the home.

Frequently asked questions

How big is this diya compared to a normal one?

It measures 8 cm across and 2.5 cm deep. Our everyday clay diya is 6 cm, so this one is noticeably wider and holds more oil, which keeps the flame going longer.

Are wicks and oil included?

No, the diya comes on its own. You will need a cotton wick and ghee or oil. Our Rui Batti listing has cotton wicks in packs of 100.

Which pack should I buy?

A single is right for the pooja thali. Six covers the mandir, the entrance and the balcony. Twelve lights a typical flat for Diwali night, especially if you mix them with smaller 6 cm diyas on the ledges.

Is the gold painted by hand?

Yes. The gold is brushed onto the raised rim and spout by hand, so you will see small variations and a little red showing through. That is the mark of a hand-finished piece rather than a defect.

Can I reuse the diya next year?

Yes. Let it cool, wipe away the leftover oil with a dry cloth and store it wrapped in paper. Handled gently it will last several seasons.

Is it only for Diwali?

Not at all. It suits Dhanteras, Karwa Chauth, Navratri, Karthigai Deepam and everyday evening aarti at the home mandir.
