The story behind the vrat
According to legend, Nandini - daughter of the celestial cow Kamadhenu - was a divine cow who fulfilled the wishes of sages and devotees. A woman, in trying to protect her own son, failed to shield Nandini from harm, and as a consequence was separated from her child. On the counsel of the gods, she observed the Govatsa Dwadashi vrat and was reunited with her son. The observance has carried that meaning ever since - a vrat kept for the protection and long life of one's children.
How the puja is performed
Traditionally, women wake early, bathe, and worship a cow and her calf in the evening as they return from grazing - bathing them, applying turmeric and vermilion, and offering flowers, incense, a diya and sweets, followed by jaggery and gram as fodder. Where a real cow and calf are not available, an image or small idol is used instead, bathed and decorated the same way. Milk, curd, ghee, buttermilk and anything fried in oil are avoided for the day, since it is considered a day of rest for the cow - the fast is broken only in the evening, after the puja.
