Who Lord Vishwakarma Is
Lord Vishwakarma is the divine architect, the one the Rigveda credits with shaping the universe itself. He built Dwarka for Krishna, Lanka, the Pushpaka Vimana and the weapons of the devas. He is the patron of everyone who makes something with their hands and their tools.
That is the reason this puja belongs to workshops rather than to living rooms. Engineers, mechanics, carpenters, electricians, tailors, drivers, fabricators, IT teams and factory workers all keep it, and the object of worship is not only the murti. It is the tools and the machines themselves.

Those timings are identical in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman and the rest of the UAE. A Sankranti is an astronomical instant rather than a sunrise-based window, so the whole country shares one clock for it. Local sunrise shifts by a few minutes between emirates, but it does not move the Punya Kaal.

Preparing the Workspace
Preparation starts a day or two before. Workshops, garages, offices and factory floors are cleaned properly, and machines, tools and vehicles are washed down. In many workshops the machines get a fresh coat of paint or at least a proper degreasing.
Flowers, mango leaf toran and rangoli go up at the entrance. The tools that will be worshipped are gathered and laid out together rather than left scattered at their stations.

Vishwakarma Puja Vidhi
- Purify. Sprinkle gangajal around the work area and lightly over the tools, machines and vehicles. This is the step that formally sets the space apart for the puja.
- Set the altar. Place a chowki with a clean red or yellow cloth and set the Vishwakarma murti or photo on it, facing east or north east. Decorate with flowers and mango leaves.
- Lay out the tools. Arrange the tools, instruments and machine parts in front of or beside the altar. In a workshop where machines cannot be moved, do the puja at the machine instead.
- Kalash sthapana. Fill a kalash with water, place mango leaves and a coconut on top, and set it beside the altar.
- Sankalp. Light the deepak and dhoop, take water in your right hand and state the sankalp, naming the workplace and the people whose livelihood depends on it.
- Tie the mauli. Tie kalawa on the tools, on the machines and on the wrists of everyone present. This is the part workers wait for.
- Offer. Roli, akshat, flowers, fruit and sweets to the murti, and a tilak of roli and akshat on each machine.
- Chant. Recite Om Shri Vishwakarmane Namah, or have the pandit lead the Vedic mantras if one is attending.
- Havan. Where space and safety allow, a small havan is performed. This is common in larger workshops and is usually kept short.
- Aarti and prasad. Close with camphor aarti and distribute prasad to every worker present, not only to management. The distribution is the point of the day.

Keeping Vishwakarma Puja in the UAE
This is one of the most widely kept festivals among the Indian working community here, and it looks different from how it looks in India. The industrial areas carry it: Al Quoz, Al Qusais, Ras Al Khor, Sharjah Industrial Area, Ajman Industrial and the workshops around Jebel Ali all mark the day.
17 September 2026 is a Thursday, a full working day. That turns out to be convenient. The Maha Punya Kaal of 06:28 AM to 08:31 AM sits exactly in the window before most shifts begin, so the puja can be done at the workplace with the full team present and work can start straight after.
A few practical points that come up here every year. Open flame is restricted in many leased industrial units and civil defence rules apply, so check with your building management before planning a havan. A contained copper kund on a non combustible surface, away from any solvent or paint store, is the safe form. Many workshops here now skip the havan entirely and keep to the aarti, which is perfectly acceptable.
Sourcing is the other issue. Mango leaves, flowers and fresh coconut in the quantity a workshop needs do not appear reliably at short notice, so order a few days ahead. If you are in Sharjah or Ajman allow an extra day for delivery.

After the Puja
Many workshops keep the machines idle for the rest of the day after the puja, or at least until the aarti is done. It reads as respect for the tools that feed the people using them, and it is a practice worth keeping where the work schedule allows it.

Is a havan compulsory?
No. The aarti and the offering to the tools are the core of the day. Many UAE workshops skip the havan because of fire restrictions in leased industrial units, and the puja is complete without it.
What do you tie the mauli on?
On the machines and tools being worshipped, and on the right wrist of the men and the left wrist of the women present. In workshops the thread is usually tied on the main machine first, then on everyone in turn.
Should the whole team be present, including non Hindu staff?
Everyone who works there is normally invited, and the prasad goes to all of them. The day is about the work and the people who do it, so no one is excluded. Attendance at the puja itself is always left to the individual.
Can the puja be done later in the day if the morning does not work?
Yes, anywhere inside the Punya Kaal up to 01:00 PM is valid. The Maha Punya Kaal before 08:31 AM is preferred, which for a Thursday in the UAE happens to line up well with the start of the working day.
What should I do with the tools after the puja?
Leave them arranged until the aarti is finished, then return them to their stations. The mauli stays on until it wears off on its own. Never cut it off and throw it away, and if it does come off, immerse it in water rather than binning it.
