Yes, you can perform a havan at home without a pandit. A complete home havan needs a small kund, dry wood, pure ghee, havan samagri and the right sequence: sankalpa, lighting the fire, Ganesh ahuti, the main offerings with mantras, purnahuti and aarti. A simple version takes 30 to 45 minutes and works in a UAE apartment with a few precautions.
This guide walks through every step, with each mantra in Sanskrit, in English letters and in plain meaning, so you can follow along even if Sanskrit is unfamiliar.
What Is Havan
Havan, also called yajna or homam, is the Vedic fire ritual in which offerings are placed into a sacred fire while mantras are recited. Agni, the fire, is treated as the messenger who carries each offering to the deity being invoked.

Families perform havan to purify a home, to begin something new, to mark a birthday, to seek peace during a difficult time or simply as regular worship. Every offering ends with "svaha", and many are followed by "idam na mama", meaning "this is not mine". That small phrase is the heart of the ritual: you give without keeping a claim on what you gave.
A pandit brings experience and fluent Sanskrit, but the ritual itself does not depend on one. What it needs is a clean space, the right samagri and a clear intention.
Which Havan for Which Occasion
Different intentions call for different mantras. The structure of the havan stays the same; only the main ahuti changes.
| Occasion | Havan | Main mantra |
|---|---|---|
| Moving into a new home | Vastu Shanti havan | Vastoshpati mantra |
| General home purification | Gayatri havan | Gayatri mantra |
| Birthday or anniversary | Ayushya havan | Mahamrityunjaya mantra |
| Planetary peace | Navagraha Shanti havan | Navagraha mantras |
| Health and recovery in the family | Mahamrityunjaya havan | Mahamrityunjaya mantra |
| New business or venture | Ganesh Lakshmi havan | Ganesh and Lakshmi mantras |
| Navratri Ashtami or Navami | Durga havan | Navarna mantra |
If you are unsure which suits you, a Gayatri havan is always appropriate. For a fuller planetary ritual with each graha's own offerings, see our guide to Navagraha puja at home.

What You Need - Havan Samagri List
Gather everything before you begin. Getting up mid-ritual to look for the camphor breaks your concentration, and an unattended fire is never a good idea.

For the fire
- Havan kund in copper, brass or clay
- Dry samidha: mango wood twigs or slim havan samidha
- Camphor (kapoor) to start the flame
- Cow dung cakes (kande), optional but traditional
- Pure cow ghee, kept separate from kitchen ghee
For the ahuti
- Havan samagri, a blend of dried herbs, roots, resins and aromatic wood
- Sesame seeds (til)
- Barley (jau)
- Rice (akshat)
- Dried coconut (gola) for the purnahuti
For the puja
- Kalash or lota of water, ideally with a little Gangajal
- Achmani spoon for achaman
- Flowers, kumkum, haldi and chandan
- Diya and incense
- A wooden or brass spoon for ghee
For closing
- Fruit or sweets for prasad
- Panchamrit, if your family tradition includes it
The samagri itself is where most UAE buyers get caught out. Many low-priced packets are mostly sawdust and fragrance, which smoke heavily and burn badly. Our guide on what is really inside cheap havan samagri shows how to spot the difference.
If you would rather not source each item separately, the Havan Pooja Box has the samagri packed together and is delivered across the UAE. We do not stock ghee; any pure desi cow ghee from a UAE supermarket works.

How to Set Up the Havan Kund

Sit facing east, or north if east is not possible. Place the kund in front of you at arm's length, on a metal tray or a couple of bricks, never directly on carpet, a rug or a wooden floor. The base of a copper kund gets hot enough to mark a tiled floor.
Keep the kalash to your right. Put the samagri, ghee, til, jau and rice in small bowls within easy reach, because you will be making many offerings and should not have to stretch over the fire. Light a diya beside the kund; it stays lit through the ritual.
For a tower apartment the 12 cm copper havan kund is the right size: a small, steady fire with much less smoke. Larger brass kunds suit a villa garden or a community hall.
Step by Step Havan Vidhi
Step 1 - Achaman (Purifying Yourself)
Using the achmani, pour a few drops of water into your right palm and sip it three times, once with each name:
ॐ केशवाय नमः। ॐ नारायणाय नमः। ॐ माधवाय नमः॥
Om Keshavaya Namah. Om Narayanaya Namah. Om Madhavaya Namah.
Salutations to Vishnu in three of his names. Sip once after each.
Then wash your hands with a little water and sprinkle a few drops over yourself and the samagri.
Step 2 - Sankalpa (Setting Your Intention)
Take a little water in your right hand with a few grains of akshat and a flower. Say your name, your gotra if you know it, the place and the purpose of the havan, then let the water fall to the ground.
"Om. Adya shubha muhurte, mama [your name], [your gotra] gotrasya, [your intention] siddhyartham havanam karishye."
If the Sanskrit feels unfamiliar, say the same thing in your own language. The sankalpa is what turns a fire into a ritual with a purpose.
Step 3 - Agni Sthapana (Lighting the Sacred Fire)

Arrange a few pieces of samidha loosely in the kund with a piece of camphor underneath. Light the camphor, let the wood catch, and then make your first ghee offering:
ॐ अग्नये स्वाहा। इदं अग्नये इदं न मम॥
Om Agnaye Svaha. Idam Agnaye, idam na mama.
This is offered to Agni. This is for Agni, not for me.
Wait until the flame is steady before the main offerings. A fire that keeps dying is a sign the wood is damp or packed too tightly.
Step 4 - Ganesh Ahuti
Every ritual begins with Ganesha. Offer a pinch of samagri with a few drops of ghee three times:
ॐ गं गणपतये स्वाहा॥
Om Gam Ganapataye Svaha.
Offered to Ganesha, remover of obstacles. Repeat three times.
Step 5 - Main Ahuti (Offerings with Mantras)

This is the heart of the havan. With each repetition of your chosen mantra, offer a little samagri into the fire on the word "svaha".
Offer samagri with your right hand, held between the thumb, middle and ring fingers, palm turned up. Offer ghee separately with a small wooden spoon. Mixing ghee into the samagri bowl turns it into a paste that smothers the flame, and a pinch per ahuti is plenty: 108 heaped offerings will choke a 12 cm kund.
For a general home havan, the Gayatri mantra:
ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः। तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि। धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् स्वाहा॥
Om Bhur Bhuvah Svah. Tat Savitur Varenyam, Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi, Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat. Svaha.
We meditate on the radiant light of the divine Savitr; may it inspire our understanding. Offer 11, 21 or 108 times.
For a first havan, 21 repetitions takes about 10 to 15 minutes. A full round of 108 takes around 45 minutes.
For Navagraha Shanti, one offering to each of the nine grahas:
ॐ सूर्याय स्वाहा। ॐ चन्द्राय स्वाहा। ॐ भौमाय स्वाहा। ॐ बुधाय स्वाहा। ॐ बृहस्पतये स्वाहा। ॐ शुक्राय स्वाहा। ॐ शनैश्चराय स्वाहा। ॐ राहवे स्वाहा। ॐ केतवे स्वाहा॥
Om Suryaya Svaha. Om Chandraya Svaha. Om Bhaumaya Svaha. Om Budhaya Svaha. Om Brihaspataye Svaha. Om Shukraya Svaha. Om Shanaishcharaya Svaha. Om Rahave Svaha. Om Ketave Svaha.
Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. Bhauma is Mangal.
For Vastu Shanti or Griha Pravesh, after the Gayatri round:
ॐ वास्तोष्पतये स्वाहा॥
Om Vastoshpataye Svaha.
Offered to Vastoshpati, the Vedic guardian of the dwelling. Repeat 11 times.
For an Ayushya or Mahamrityunjaya havan:
ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम्। उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय माऽमृतात् स्वाहा॥
Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam. Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Mamritat. Svaha.
We worship the three-eyed Shiva who nourishes all; may he free us from death as a ripe cucumber falls from the vine, and not from immortality. Repeat 11 or 21 times.
Step 6 - Purnahuti (The Final Offering)
Stand if you are able. Take the dried coconut, fill or coat it with samagri, til, jau and a little ghee, and place it into the fire with both hands while chanting three times:
ॐ सर्वं वै पूर्णं स्वाहा॥
Om Sarvam Vai Purnam Svaha.
All is complete. Chant three times as the purnahuti is offered.
Pour the remaining ghee slowly over the coconut. The purnahuti closes the offerings.
Step 7 - Aarti and Shanti Path
Perform aarti with the diya to the deity photo or murti near the kund. Sprinkle water from the kalash around the kund in a clockwise circle, then close with:
ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः॥
Om Shantih Shantih Shantih.
Peace in body, in surroundings and in the divine.
Fold your hands and ask forgiveness for anything missed or done imperfectly. This kshama prarthana is a traditional part of every puja, not an afterthought.
Step 8 - Prasad
Share the fruit and sweets as prasad with everyone present. Let the fire burn down on its own; never pour water into a hot kund.
Navratri Havan on Ashtami or Navami
Many families close Navratri with a havan on Maha Ashtami or Maha Navami, usually after the Durga Saptashati path and before or after Kanya Pujan. The sequence above stays the same; the main ahuti uses the Navarna mantra of Durga:
ॐ ऐं ह्रीं क्लीं चामुण्डायै विच्चे स्वाहा॥
Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundayai Vichche Svaha.
The nine-syllable mantra of Chamunda, the form of Durga invoked at the close of Navratri. Offer 108 times.
Families who read the full Saptashati often offer one ahuti for each of its 700 verses, which is a long morning. For a home havan, 108 Navarna offerings is complete. Day-by-day vidhi and the 2026 UAE timings are in our guides to Maha Ashtami and Maha Navami, and on the Hindu Festival and Tithi Calendar.

If You Don't Know Sanskrit - This Is for You

Many Hindu families in the UAE are second or third generation away from India, and Sanskrit can feel like a test you never studied for. That worry stops more home havans than anything else.
Every mantra here is given in English letters as well as Devanagari. Read it as written and your pronunciation will be close enough. If even that feels like too much, chant "Om Svaha" with each offering while holding your sankalpa clearly in mind. The tradition is consistent that bhavna, the feeling behind the offering, matters more than perfect pronunciation.
Start small. Do it once. The second time will feel natural.
How Often Should You Do Havan at Home
There is no fixed rule. Some households do a small havan every Sunday morning; others on Purnima or Amavasya each month. For most families in the UAE, a havan on the big occasions - Navratri, Diwali, a birthday, a new home - is meaningful and sustainable.
Regularity matters more than scale. A simple havan done with care once a month is worth more than an elaborate one done once a year under stress.
Important Rules for Havan at Home
- Use pure cow ghee, never vanaspati or cooking oil
- Use real herbal samagri; perfumed sawdust smokes heavily and is not a fit offering
- Use only natural, untreated wood, never painted, varnished or plywood scraps
- Never leave the fire unattended, even for a minute
- Keep water and a damp cloth beside you
- Let the ash cool completely before you touch it
Performing Havan in the UAE - Practical Notes
In many UAE buildings the smoke detectors are wired to the building's central fire alarm, and a growing number are linked to Civil Defence through the Hassantuk system. A smoky havan can set off an alarm for the whole tower. Let building security know before you start, keep the fire to a 12 cm kund, open the windows and switch on the kitchen or bathroom extractor.
Smoke: Most smoke comes from damp wood, too much samagri at once and cheap samagri bulked out with sawdust. Dry samidha, a pinch per ahuti and good samagri keep it light.
Timing: A morning havan suits UAE life well: the flat is cooler, the air conditioning has not been running all day, and you can open the windows before the heat sets in.
Samagri: Genuine ritual-grade samagri is hard to find in UAE hypermarkets. Our havan collection has the box, the kund, samidha and loose samagri, delivered across the UAE.
Ash: Havan ash should not go in the bin or into the sea. Once it is cool, mix it into the soil of a plant pot or bury it in garden earth. Our guide on what to do with used pooja samagri covers the rest of the leftovers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I really do havan at home without a pandit?
Yes. A pandit brings fluency and experience, but the core of a havan is your sankalpa and sincere offering. A simple home havan done in the right sequence, with clean samagri and genuine intention, is complete. Many families in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah do exactly this on festivals and birthdays.
How long does a home havan take?
A simple havan with Ganesh ahuti, 21 Gayatri offerings and purnahuti takes 30 to 45 minutes including setup. With 108 offerings, allow about an hour and a half. A Navratri havan with the full Saptashati takes most of a morning.
What is the best time to do havan at home?
Morning, after a bath and before eating, is the traditional time, and it suits UAE apartments because the windows can be opened before the heat. Navratri Ashtami and Navami, Diwali, Purnima, Amavasya, birthdays and a griha pravesh are all common occasions. Avoid starting a havan after sunset where you can.
Can havan be done in a UAE apartment?
Yes, with care. Use a small kund on a metal tray, dry wood and good samagri, open the windows, run the extractor fans and tell building security first, because many building smoke detectors are linked to a central alarm. Keep water beside you and never leave the fire.
Which wood should I use for havan?
Dry mango wood is the most widely used samidha. Peepal, palash and other woods are used for specific rituals. Whatever you use must be natural and untreated. Divine Sansar stocks mango twigs and slim samidha cut to suit a small home kund.
What is the difference between havan, yajna and homam?
They are the same fire ritual. Havan is the everyday Hindi word used across North India, yajna is the Sanskrit term for the wider Vedic sacrifice, and homam is the word used in South India. The structure and intention are the same.
What should I do with havan ash in the UAE?
Let it cool completely, then mix it into the soil of a plant pot or bury it in garden earth. Do not throw it in the bin or into the sea. Some families keep a pinch as prasad and apply it as a tilak.
Where can I buy a havan kit in the UAE?
Divine Sansar's Havan Pooja Box has the samagri for a home havan packed together, and the full havan collection includes the copper kund, samidha, cow dung cakes and loose samagri. Everything is delivered across the UAE.
