Sharad Navratri 2026 begins on Sunday, 11 October 2026 with Ghatasthapana, and ends with Vijayadashami on Tuesday, 20 October 2026. Durga Ashtami and Maha Navami both fall on Monday, 19 October this year, because the two tithis merge on the same day.
Navratri is nine nights of the battle between good and evil, with good triumphing on the tenth day. Through these nine nights Maa Durga is worshipped as the goddess of power, energy and wisdom. Below is the full 2026 calendar, the nine forms, the daily colours, and how families across the UAE set up at home.
Navratri 2026 dates - day by day

Note the compression this year. Ashtami and Navami both land on Monday 19 October, with Ashtami ending mid-morning and Navami beginning straight after. Families who normally keep Kanya Pujan on Ashtami and Havan on Navami will be doing both on the same day, so plan the morning accordingly.
Ghatasthapana 2026 - when to establish the kalash

Ghatasthapana marks the invocation of Maa Durga and is done on the morning of Sunday 11 October 2026, during Pratipada tithi. For Dubai, sunrise on 11 October 2026 is 6:15 AM, and Pratipada tithi is already prevailing at sunrise, so the morning is open for Ghatasthapana right through to Rahu Kaal, which runs 4:28 PM to 5:55 PM - avoid that window. If you want one reliable moment rather than a long window, Abhijit Muhurat runs 11:42 AM to 12:28 PM. These are UAE-local timings, computed for Dubai rather than copied from an Indian listing - they run about 90 minutes behind the windows most panchang sites publish for New Delhi or Mumbai, because tithi is calculated against local sunrise.
Two rules that matter more than the exact minute: do not perform Ghatasthapana during Rahu Kaal, and do not do it in the afternoon. If you miss the morning window entirely, Abhijit Muhurat around midday is the accepted fallback.
What you are setting up is a clay pot of soil sown with barley seeds, with a water-filled kalash on top, mango leaves at the rim and a coconut above. This sits in the north-east of your pooja space, with the image of the Devi behind or above it, and stays undisturbed for all nine days.
Navratri 2026 colours - what to wear each day
The colour sequence follows the weekday on which each day falls. With Navratri starting on a Sunday in 2026, the order is:
| Day | Date | Colour | What it carries |
| Day 1 | Sun 11 Oct | Orange | Warmth and exuberance. Positive energy to open the nine nights. |
| Day 2 | Mon 12 Oct | White | Purity and inner peace. |
| Day 3 | Tue 13 Oct | Red | Passion and vigour. Also the colour of the chunri offered to the Devi. |
| Day 4 | Wed 14 Oct | Royal Blue | Richness and calm. |
| Day 5 | Thu 15 Oct | Yellow | Optimism and cheer. |
| Day 6 | Fri 16 Oct | Green | Growth, fertility and new beginnings. |
| Day 7 | Sat 17 Oct | Grey | Balanced emotions, staying grounded. |
| Day 8 | Sun 18 Oct | Purple | Grandeur and nobility. |
| Day 9 | Mon 19 Oct | Peacock Green | Individuality and compassion. |
The nine forms of Maa Durga
Each night belongs to one form of the Devi. Understanding what each represents changes how the nine days feel.
Day 1: Shailputri - Devi Parvati as daughter of the Himalaya. Shaila means peak. Divine consciousness always surges from the height, and on day one we ask to reach it.
Day 2: Brahmacharini - the form in which she undertook severe penance for Lord Shiva. Brahma is divine consciousness and achar is conduct, so Brahmacharya is conduct established in the divine. A day for meditation.
Day 3: Chandraghanta - the form she took at her marriage to Shiva. Chandra is the moon, which stands for the restless mind. A ghanta is a bell that makes one sound only. The day is about settling the mind to a single point.
Day 4: Kushmanda - ku is little, ushma is energy, anda is the cosmic egg. The whole universe arose from her infinitesimal energy. She showers divine energy on those who worship her.
Day 5: Skandamata - mother of Skanda, or Kartikeya. This is the maternal aspect, vatsalya. Worshipping this form is said to bring wisdom, wealth, power and liberation.
Day 6: Katyayani - born from the anger of the gods to destroy Mahishasura. Anger that upholds dharma is acceptable, and Katyayani is that principle. Invoked to end the inner obstacles on the spiritual path.
Day 7: Kalaratri - the fierce form, the dark night. Night is also an aspect of the Mother, since it brings rest and solace, and it is only at night that we glimpse infinity in the sky.
Day 8: Mahagauri - the serene and beautiful aspect of nature, the energy that both propels life and liberates it.
Day 9: Siddhidatri - siddhi means perfection. She makes the impossible possible and takes us past the reasoning mind into what lies beyond time and space.
Day 10: Vijayadashami - the tenth day of victory. Also Vidyarambham, when children are introduced to learning, and the day of Sindoor Khela.

One frame carries all nine forms, so your ghat sthapana is set once and serves every night. Free UAE delivery above AED 30.
Navratri at home in the UAE
Most Indian families in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ajman keep Navratri in an apartment rather than a house, and the nine-day setup has to survive normal life going on around it. A few things that help:
Set the deity image first, then the kalash. The ghat sits in front of the Devi, not the other way round. If you are short on shelf depth, hang the image on the wall above the shelf and put the kalash below it - the arrangement is correct and you get the depth back.
One image, nine nights. A frame carrying all nine forms means you do not need to change the image each night. Set it up at Ghatasthapana on 11 October and it serves through to Vijayadashami on the 20th, with that night's prayers simply directed to the relevant form.
Sow the barley where it gets light. The jau needs indirect daylight to sprout over the nine days. A sealed dark corner will not do it.
Mind the smoke alarm. Nine consecutive evenings of agarbatti in a sealed apartment will eventually set one off. Camphor and sambrani burn out quickly and leave much less residue.
Plan for 19 October. With Ashtami and Navami merged this year, Kanya Pujan, Sandhi Puja and the Navami havan all fall on one Monday. If you invite kanyas for Kanya Pujan, fix the time early - most families in the UAE will be competing for the same morning.
Fasting during Navratri

Devotees fast through the nine days, avoiding grains, onion, garlic, meat and alcohol. Vrat food is built on kuttu and singhare ka atta, sabudana, samak rice, potato, rock salt and fruit.
Fasting is not compulsory and not everyone can do it. If a full fast is not workable, one meal a day with the katha read at home carries the observance perfectly well. The tradition itself makes this allowance - as the vrat katha below records, listening to the story with your family counts.
Spiritual meaning of Navratri
Several stories sit behind the festival.
The demon king Mahishasura made war on the heavenly gods. To fight him, all the gods including Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu combined their divine power to produce Shakti, the Mother of Power. Goddess Durga was created, and after nine nights of fierce battle she killed Mahishasura. The tenth day is Vijayadashami, the victory of good over evil.
Before Lord Rama began the war with Ravana to rescue Sita, he worshipped Goddess Durga and sought her blessings. The puja required 108 lotus flowers, and as Rama was about to offer one of his own eyes to complete the count, the Goddess appeared and blessed him with her Shakti.
In the eastern tradition, Uma, daughter of the mountain king, returns to her parents' home for ten days during Navratri. The festival celebrates her homecoming.
Navratri Vrat Katha
Guru Brihaspati, with great reverence, addressed Lord Brahma, saying, "O Brahma, you are the most wise, the foremost among those who know all the scriptures and the four Vedas. Why is the Navratri fast observed during the Shukla Paksha of Chaitra, Ashwin, Magh and Ashadha? What is its significance, how should it be performed, and who first observed it?"
Lord Brahma began to speak. "O Brihaspati, your inquiry, made with the intention of benefiting all beings, is truly commendable. This Navratri fast is capable of fulfilling all desires. One who seeks a child may be blessed with one, those seeking wealth may gain riches, those yearning for knowledge may attain wisdom, and those desiring happiness may find joy. This fast can cure the sick, free the imprisoned, and dispel misfortune, bringing prosperity to the household. There is no desire it cannot fulfil."
"If someone cannot fast all day, they may eat once and listen to the story of Navratri with their family. Now I will recount the history of the one who first observed this great vow."
"In a beautiful city called Peethat there lived a Brahmin named Anath, devoted to Goddess Durga. He had a daughter named Sumati. She grew like the waxing moon, more radiant each day. Her father worshipped Durga daily and was always pleased to see her devotion. But one day Sumati, absorbed in play, missed the worship. Her father, angered, said, 'You have not joined the worship of the goddess today. Therefore I will marry you to a leper or a poor man.'"
"Sumati replied, 'Father, I am your daughter and under your command. Marry me as you wish. Whatever is written in my destiny will come to pass. Our actions are within our control, but the results are governed by fate.'"
"Her fearless words only increased his anger, and he married her to a leper. Sumati accompanied her husband to the forest, and they spent a night in great misery in a desolate place. Seeing the young woman in such a state, Goddess Durga, pleased by her past virtues, appeared and said, 'O Brahmin woman, I am pleased with you. Ask for any boon you desire.'"
"Sumati asked, 'Who are you, O Divine One, who has graced me with your presence?'"
"The goddess replied, 'I am the primordial Shakti, the source of all power. When pleased, I remove the sorrows of all beings. I am pleased with you because of your past life's merits. In your previous birth you were the wife of a Nishad and were devoted to your husband. You were both captured for stealing and imprisoned. During the Navratri days you neither ate nor drank, and so you unintentionally observed the Navratri fast for nine days. I am pleased by the power of that fast. Ask whatever you wish.'"
"Sumati said, 'If you are truly pleased with me, I ask that my husband be cured.'"
"The goddess replied, 'Offer the merit of one day of that Navratri fast. By my grace your husband will be cured and will have a body as radiant as gold.'"
"Sumati joyfully offered the merit, and instantly her husband's body was made whole and shone with a brilliance surpassing the moon. Seeing him transformed, Sumati praised the goddess as the saviour of the afflicted and the remover of all sorrow."
"The goddess further blessed Sumati with a wise, wealthy and virtuous son named Udayal, and revealed the method of performing the Navratri fast that pleases her. Performed correctly, it leads to the fulfilment of all desires and ultimately to moksha."
"Thus, Brihaspati, the greatness of this rare and powerful vow has been revealed. Those who observe it with devotion will attain happiness in this world and liberation in the hereafter."

Q: When is Navratri 2026?
A: Sharad Navratri 2026 starts on Sunday, 11 October 2026 with Ghatasthapana and ends with Vijayadashami on Tuesday, 20 October 2026. Durga Ashtami and Maha Navami both fall on Monday, 19 October.
Q: Why do Ashtami and Navami fall on the same day in 2026?
A: Tithis are lunar, not solar, so they do not map neatly onto 24-hour days. In 2026 Ashtami ends in the late morning of 19 October and Navami begins immediately after, which puts both observances on the same Monday. Plan Kanya Pujan and the Navami havan for that one day.
Q: What is the Ghatasthapana muhurat for Navratri 2026?
A: The morning of Sunday 11 October, during Pratipada tithi. For Dubai, sunrise is 6:15 AM and the whole morning through early afternoon sits within Pratipada tithi, so it is open for Ghatasthapana - avoid only Rahu Kaal, 4:28 PM to 5:55 PM. Abhijit Muhurat, 11:42 AM to 12:28 PM, is the single most reliable window if you want one specific moment. These are UAE-local timings calculated for Dubai, and they run about 90 minutes behind the Indian windows most panchang sites publish, because tithi is calculated against local sunrise.
Q: Do I need nine separate images for the nine nights?
A: No. A single Navdurga image carrying all nine forms is the usual solution, and it is what most families keep. Set it up once at Ghatasthapana and direct each night's prayers to the form of that day. Our Navdurga A4 photo frame shows Maa Durga at the centre with all nine forms around her.
Q: What are the Navratri 2026 colours?
A: Orange, white, red, royal blue, yellow, green, grey, purple and peacock green, in that order from 11 to 19 October. The sequence follows the weekday each day falls on, which is why it changes from year to year.
Q: Can I keep Navratri properly in a small apartment?
A: Yes. The ghat needs very little floor area - a clay pot of sown barley with the kalash above it, placed in the north-east with the Devi's image behind. Use the wall for the image if shelf depth is tight, keep the barley where it gets indirect daylight, and use camphor rather than incense to avoid setting off a smoke alarm over nine evenings.
Q: Is fasting compulsory during Navratri?
A: No. Many devotees keep a full nine-day fast, but the tradition explicitly allows for one meal a day with the katha heard at home. Observe what you can sustain for nine days rather than what looks most rigorous on day one.
Q: What is done with the ghat and barley after Vijayadashami?
A: The sprouted barley is offered to family members and elders as a blessing, often tucked behind the ear or into a cap. The kalash water is sprinkled through the home, and the pot and remaining samagri are disposed of respectfully in flowing water or under a tree rather than in household waste.
