Why this one looks different from an ordinary akhand diya

Most akhand diyas are a shallow brass bowl under a plain glass dome. This is built as a lantern. The oil bowl sits on a fluted brass pedestal, the glass chimney rises straight from the bowl rim, and a fluted brass crown caps the top and stays open at the centre so the flame breathes. On a mandir shelf it reads as a piece of decor even when it is not lit.

Which size should you take

Take the 160 ml if this is your everyday mandir lamp or your shelf is shallow. Take the 250 ml if you keep an akhand jyot running through a festival, or you want the lamp to hold its own next to a full-size idol. The build, the knob and the chimney are identical on both. Only the bowl and the height change.

How to set up your akhand jyot

1. Lift off the brass crown and the glass chimney and set them aside.
2. Fill the bowl with ghee or til oil, staying below the rim.
3. Seat a cotton bati in the wick clip. Our kesar tip rui batti fits both sizes.
4. Light the wick, then seat the chimney and the crown back on.
5. Turn the crystal knob to raise or lower the bati until the flame is steady and smoke free.

Burn time depends on the oil you use, the thickness of the bati and how high you set the flame. A thinner wick and a lower flame will always stretch a single fill further.

Care and safety

• Never leave a lit diya unattended, including overnight during akhand jyot.
• Keep it away from children, pets, curtains and anything that catches easily.
• Let the brass and the glass cool fully before you refill or clean.
• Clean the brass with a mild brass polish or a lemon and besan paste, then dry it completely.
• Wipe soot off the inside of the chimney with a soft cloth so the flame stays visible.

What is the difference between the 160 ml and the 250 ml akhand diya?

Only the size of the oil bowl and the overall height. The 160 ml stands 19 cm tall and is 8.5 cm wide. The 250 ml stands 23 cm tall and is 10.5 cm wide, and holds a bigger fill so you refill less often during a long jyot.

How does the crystal knob work?

The crystal sits on a threaded brass shaft that passes through the bowl wall and connects to the wick clip. Turning it lifts or drops the bati, so you can raise a dying flame or bring down a smoky one without lifting the hot chimney.

Which oil is best for akhand jyot?

Pure ghee is the traditional choice and burns cleanly. Til (sesame) oil is the usual pick for longer rituals, and mustard oil is common in North Indian homes. Avoid blended cooking oils, which soot up the chimney quickly.

Can I keep it lit all nine nights of Navratri?

Yes, that is what it is built for, but an akhand jyot is refilled and watched, not left alone. Top up the oil before it runs low, keep a spare bati nearby, and never leave the flame unattended in an empty home.

Is the glass chimney removable?

Yes. The brass crown lifts off and the chimney comes away from the bowl rim, so filling, lighting and cleaning are all done with the glass out of the way.

Does it come with a wick?

One cotton bati is included so you can light it the day it arrives. For a season of daily use, a pack of long rui batti is worth adding.

Is this a good Grah Pravesh or Diwali gift?
