The meaning of the Kalash
The kalash represents abundance and the source of life, and its sthapana (installation) is one of the first steps in many poojas and havans. Filled with water and crowned with mango leaves and a coconut, it is invoked as the seat of the deities and a symbol of good fortune entering the home.
How to set it up (Kalash Sthapana)
- Clean the kalash and place a Swastik with kumkum on the front if not already marked.
- Fill it with clean water (and a coin, supari or rice if your vidhi calls for it).
- Arrange five or seven mango leaves around the rim and rest a coconut on top.
- Keep it on a bed of rice on your altar for the duration of the pooja.
