Ganesh Chaturthi marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and the one invoked before any new beginning. It falls in the month of Bhadrapada, usually in late August or September, and in many homes the celebration runs for ten days from Chaturthi to Anant Chaturdashi, when the idol is taken for visarjan.

The rhythm is simple and the same whether you keep Bappa for a day and a half or the full ten. Sthapana on the first morning, aarti twice a day, modak and durva grass offered daily, and a warm goodbye at the end.

Ganesh Chaturthi falls in the month of Bhadrapada, usually late August or September, and the date shifts each year with the panchang. Ten days to Anant Chaturdashi is traditional, but one and a half, three, five or seven days are all common and equally accepted. Choose what suits your household.

What do I need for Ganpati sthapana at home?

A clay idol is easiest to conclude respectfully at home. A DIY clay kit gives a 20cm idol that dissolves in a bucket of water, which makes it the practical choice for apartment living in the UAE.

How do I do Ganpati visarjan in the UAE?
Most families in the UAE immerse at home rather than in the sea. Fill a clean bucket or large tub, perform the final aarti, immerse the clay idol, and once it has dissolved pour the water into a plant or garden soil rather than a drain. Metal, marble or resin idols are not immersed at all and are kept and worshipped year after year.

What is offered to Lord Ganesha during the pooja?
Modak first, along with durva grass, which is his special offering. Beyond that, laddoo, coconut, banana, jaggery and any home-made sweet. Twenty-one is the traditional count for both durva blades and modak, though intention matters more than the number.
