This handmade terracotta clay tray is made for sowing jau (barley) at Navratri. It measures 21 cm across and 5.5 cm deep, a wide, shallow shape that lets the jawara spread into one full, even crop beside your kalash from Ghatasthapana to Navami.
Natural, unglazed clay breathes and holds moisture evenly, which is why mitti vessels have always been the first choice for sowing jau, also called jaware or khetri. Outside Navratri the tray works just as well as a diya plate, a flower tray for your altar or a base for a small tulsi or money plant pot.

How much soil does the tray need for jau?
About 1 kg of soil fills it to a centimetre below the rim, which gives the barley enough depth to root and stand tall.
Should I soak the clay tray before use?
Yes, if you can. Rinse it and let it soak in water for 10 to 15 minutes before filling. Dry clay pulls water out of the soil on the first day.
Is the tray glazed or painted?
No. It is plain natural terracotta, the traditional choice for sowing jau and for pooja use.
Can I use it after Navratri?
Yes. Rinse it with plain water, dry it in the shade and keep it for next year, or use it as a diya plate or a flower tray on your altar.
Is it fragile?
Like all terracotta it can chip if dropped, so handle it gently and set it on a flat surface.
