Why jau is sown at Navratri

Barley, called yava in Sanskrit, is one of the oldest grains named in Vedic ritual. Sowing it beside the kalash at Ghatasthapana is an offering of the first harvest to Maa Durga, and the shoots that grow over nine days are read as a sign of the abundance and blessings coming into the home.

How to sow jawara at home

• Soak the jau in clean water for a few hours or overnight before Ghatasthapana for quicker, even sprouting.
• Spread a layer of soil in a shallow clay tray and scatter the seeds closely over it.
• Cover with a thin layer of soil and sprinkle water gently - keep it moist, never waterlogged.
• Place it near your kalash in indirect light and water lightly every morning during your pooja.
• Shoots usually appear within two to three days and grow tall and green by the end of Navratri.
