Since the country's weekend moved to Saturday and Sunday in 2022, Friday is no longer a day off for most households, so the kalasam setup, the five leaves and the draped coconut are usually arranged the evening before, or across the preceding weekend, and the puja itself is kept to the shortest of the four windows that fits the day, the early Simha Lagna before work or the Kumbha Lagna after returning home. Malls and community halls in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi with South Indian associations often hold a shared evening puja for families who cannot manage the full setup at home.

Puja Vidhi: How Varalakshmi Vratam Is Performed

The centrepiece of the puja is the kalasam, a brass or silver pot filled with rice or water that represents Goddess Varalakshmi herself. Five leaves, usually mango, are tied around its neck, and a coconut smeared with turmeric is placed on top and covered with a new cloth or a small saree, so the pot takes the shape of a draped goddess. A face of Devi, either printed or a small silver mukham, is often fixed to the front of the coconut.

Two rituals are unique to this vrat and do not appear in the regular Lakshmi Puja performed during Diwali. A sacred thread called the Dorak is tied around the wrist after the main puja, in the same way a Raksha thread is tied, and sweets or small gifts called Vayana are offered to the goddess and later shared with married women who are invited to the home. The rest of the sequence, dhyanam, avahanam, offering of kumkum, flowers and akhand diya light, followed by aarti, mirrors a standard Lakshmi puja.
