Hartalika Teej 2026 in the UAE: Date, Muhurat, Vidhi and Vrat Rules

Sand shivling with marigold garland and a clay Parvati figure on a wooden chowki, brass lamps lit alongside - Divine Sansar UAE

Hartalika Teej 2026 falls on Sunday, 13 September 2026. For Dubai, the Pratahkala puja muhurat is 06:04 AM to 08:33 AM and the Pradosh Kala muhurat is 06:26 PM to 08:46 PM. Most women in the UAE use the evening window, since the morning one lands before the working day for many households.

These timings are calculated for Dubai in Gulf Standard Time. They are not the IST timings your family in India will be following, and the difference is real.

What Hartalika Teej Is

Hartalika Teej is observed on Shukla Paksha Tritiya of the Bhadrapada month, and it marks the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Married women keep it for the wellbeing and long life of their husbands. Unmarried women keep it asking for a good match.

The name comes from the story itself. Parvati had resolved to marry Shiva, but her father had promised her elsewhere. Her friends carried her away into the forest so she could continue her tapasya undisturbed. Harat means to abduct, aalika means a woman friend, and the festival is named for that act of loyalty.

In the forest Parvati made a Shivling from sand, worshipped it through the night without food or water, and it was that vrat that Shiva finally answered. The sand murti and the night vigil are why the vrat is kept the way it is today.

Hartalika Teej 2026 Muhurat for the UAE

Observance Date and Time (Dubai)
Hartalika Teej 2026 Sunday, 13 September 2026
Tritiya Tithi 05:38 AM on 13 Sep to 05:36 AM on 14 Sep
Pratahkala Puja Muhurat 06:04 AM to 08:33 AM
Pradosh Kala Puja Muhurat 06:26 PM to 08:46 PM

Sunrise in Dubai on 13 September is 06:04 AM and sunset is 06:26 PM. Sharjah and Ajman run about a minute ahead, Abu Dhabi about four minutes behind, so the windows above hold across the UAE to within five minutes. The Hartalika Teej card on our Hindu calendar carries the same tithi window and timings.

The Hartalika Teej Vrat: What It Actually Asks

The traditional vrat is nirjala, kept without food and without water, from sunrise until the puja is completed the next morning. It is one of the strictest vrats in the Hindu calendar, stricter than Karwa Chauth, because there is no moonrise to break it at.

That said, the tradition has always made room for the body. Women who are pregnant, nursing, unwell, diabetic or elderly keep a phalahar vrat with fruit, milk and water instead, and this is entirely accepted. In the UAE heat, if September is still running warm, water is the sensible choice. A vrat kept with resentment or a trip to hospital serves no one.

The vrat is traditionally kept once begun. If you take it up one year, the custom is to continue it in the years that follow, which is worth knowing before you start. If you already keep the Sawan Somwar fast for Shiva, the discipline will feel familiar, though Hartalika is the harder of the two.

Hartalika Teej Puja Vidhi

  1. Bathe and dress in traditional clothes. Green is the colour of Teej. Solah shringar, the sixteen adornments, is part of the observance for married women.
  2. Make a small Shivling and murtis of Parvati and Ganesha from clean sand or shadu clay. This is the heart of the vrat and should not be skipped for a metal idol if you can manage it.
  3. Place them on a wooden chowki with a clean cloth, facing east or north east.
  4. Light the deepak and take the sankalp, stating the vrat you are keeping and for whom.
  5. Offer the shodashopachara: water, milk, honey, chandan, akshat, flowers, bilva patra to Shiva, and haldi, kumkum, bangles, sindoor and a green chunri to Parvati.
  6. Read the Hartalika Teej Vrat Katha. The vrat is considered incomplete without the katha.
  7. Sing the aarti with lit camphor and stay awake through the night with bhajans if you are keeping the full vigil.
  8. The next morning, offer the sindoor to Parvati, immerse the sand murtis in clean water, and break the fast.

Keeping Hartalika Teej in the UAE

Two practical problems come up every year here. The first is sand. The vrat calls for clean river sand or shadu clay for the murtis, and beach sand full of salt and shell fragments is not a substitute. Buy shadu clay ahead of time, or keep a small quantity of the clay you used last year.

The second is bilva patra and fresh green bangles. Neither turns up reliably in a supermarket, and by the weekend before Teej the Indian grocers in Bur Dubai and Karama are usually cleared out. Order early, and if you are outside Dubai allow an extra day. Fresh bel leaves also keep for only a day or two in this climate, which is why many families here now keep a set of silver plated belpatra for the abhishek and reuse it each year.

Because 13 September 2026 is a Sunday, most families in the UAE will have the day free, which makes the morning muhurat far more workable than it usually is. It also means the temples will be busy. The Shiva Temple in Bur Dubai, in the old complex opposite Dubai Museum, opens 07:30 AM to 11:00 AM and again 05:00 PM to 08:00 PM. The Hindu Temple in Jebel Ali has far more space and parking. Note that only the tail of the Pratahkala muhurat falls inside the Bur Dubai morning window, so the evening is the easier temple visit. Our guide to Hindu temples in the UAE has directions for both. Go early on Teej.

For the puja itself, the Mahadev Shiv Pooja Box carries the Shiva samagri the vidhi above calls for, and the pooja samagri range covers the haldi, kumkum, sindoor and chandan for Parvati.

Traditional Teej Foods

The fast is broken with sweets rather than a heavy meal. Ghewar, the crisp honeycomb disc soaked in syrup, is the Teej sweet above all others. Malpua with rabri is the other. Fresh melon and pomegranate are traditionally eaten alongside.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Hartalika Teej 2026?

Sunday, 13 September 2026. The Dubai Pratahkala muhurat is 06:04 AM to 08:33 AM and the Pradosh Kala muhurat is 06:26 PM to 08:46 PM. The Tritiya tithi runs from 05:38 AM on 13 September to 05:36 AM on 14 September.

Can I drink water during the Hartalika Teej vrat?

The strict vrat is nirjala, without water. If you are pregnant, nursing, diabetic, unwell or elderly, keeping a phalahar vrat with water and fruit is accepted practice and always has been. Your health is not a compromise of the vrat.

Can unmarried girls keep Hartalika Teej?

Yes. Parvati herself kept it before marriage. Unmarried women observe it asking for a suitable husband, and the vidhi is the same.

What is the difference between Hartalika Teej, Hariyali Teej and Kajari Teej?

All three fall in the monsoon months and all three honour Shiva and Parvati. Hariyali Teej comes first in Shravana, Kajari Teej follows in Bhadrapada Krishna Paksha, and Hartalika Teej is the last and the strictest, in Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha.

Do I have to make the murtis from sand?

The sand or clay murti is the traditional form and it is what the katha describes. If you truly cannot source clay, a small metal Shivling from the home mandir is used rather than skipping the puja, but make the effort for the clay if you can.

What do I do with the sand murtis afterwards?

Immerse them in clean water the next morning after the fast is broken. A bucket of clean water at home works, and the water is then poured at the base of a plant. Never leave them in a bin.

Where can I do Hartalika Teej puja at a temple in Dubai?

The Shiva Temple in Bur Dubai, opposite Dubai Museum, and the Hindu Temple in Jebel Ali. Bur Dubai opens 07:30 AM to 11:00 AM and 05:00 PM to 08:00 PM, so only the last hour of the Pratahkala muhurat falls inside its morning hours. Jebel Ali has more room and easier parking. Both are heavily attended on Teej, so go early or keep the puja at home.

Why is my family in India observing Teej on a different day?

Tithis begin and end at fixed astronomical moments that fall at different clock times in Gulf Standard Time than in IST. A tithi that begins late evening in India can put the observance a day earlier in Dubai. The date on this page is calculated for the UAE.
