What is Saraswati Avahan?
Avahan means invocation. On this day the household formally invites Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of learning, speech, music and the arts, to be present for the days that follow. A photo or murti is set up, and the family's books, pens, notebooks and musical instruments are placed before her.
It is observed in the second half of Navratri and is especially important in South India, Bengal and Odisha. Families who keep Saraswati Puja on Vasant Panchami often keep this one too once they move abroad, because the Navratri window falls neatly before the first-term school assessments.

Saraswati Avahan vidhi at home
Keep it simple and do it inside the muhurat. Start after 12:02 PM and aim to finish before 5:51 PM. A weekday lunch break or an early evening start both work, since Friday is a working day in the UAE.
- Clean the space and place a white or yellow cloth on a low stand. Set up the Saraswati photo or murti facing east if you can.
- Light a lamp and agarbatti, and place a kalash of clean water beside the image.
- Apply chandan and kumkum to the goddess, and offer white or yellow flowers.
- Place books, pens and any instruments in front of her. These are the offering, so you leave them untouched until Visarjan.
- Invite her with a simple Saraswati mantra or prayer you already know, then offer naivedyam and do a short aarti.
If you can only keep one day, many families do the invocation and the books-down pause together on this evening and take the books back up the next morning. Your family tradition comes first.

Why the books go down
The central idea of these days is that you hand your work to the goddess. Books are placed before her and not opened, instruments are not played, and tools of the trade are left alone until Visarjan. The pause is the offering.
For students this is often a favourite tradition. For adults it is a quiet reminder that learning is something received with gratitude, not only something achieved.
Saraswati Avahan in the UAE
Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ajman have a very large community of Indian school families, so this festival is kept in many homes here, usually in the living room in front of a small home mandir.
Friday is a working day. The muhurat opens at 12:02 PM, so many families do the invocation after the Friday prayer break or in the early evening, and finish before 5:51 PM. If you are at work, a short lamp-and-flowers Avahan at home as soon as you return is better than skipping it, but try to start inside the window.
