What is Narasimha Jayanti?
Narasimha Jayanti marks the day Lord Vishnu appeared as Narasimha, the fourth of his ten avatars, with the body of a man and the head of a lion. The Puranas tell how he appeared from a pillar at twilight to protect his young devotee Prahlada from the tyrant Hiranyakashipu. The story is read as a promise that sincere devotion is always protected.
The festival is observed on Vaishakha Shukla Chaturdashi. Because Narasimha appeared at dusk, the main puja is held in the late afternoon and early evening, which is why the Sayana Kala window matters more than a morning time.
Narasimha Jayanti puja vidhi at home
Many devotees keep a day-long fast and perform the main puja in the Sayana Kala window, between 4:17 PM and 6:58 PM in Dubai.
- In the morning, bathe and take the sankalp (a simple vow of intention) during the Madhyahna window, 10:55 AM to 1:36 PM.
- Clean the puja space and place an image or idol of Lord Narasimha, with Lakshmi if you have one.
- In the Sayana Kala window, light a ghee lamp and incense, and offer flowers, chandan and tulsi leaves.
- Offer a simple naivedyam such as panakam (jaggery water), fruit or sweets.
- Recite the Narasimha mantra or stotram and tell the story of Prahlada to the family.
- Finish with aarti, and break the fast the next day after Chaturdashi ends at 2:32 PM.
Your family or community tradition always comes first. If you have a health condition, are pregnant or are elderly, a lighter fast of fruit and milk is a common and acceptable choice.

Narasimha Jayanti in the UAE
Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ajman have many Vaishnava families, and Narasimha Jayanti is kept at home and in community satsangs. Programmes vary each year, so ask your local group or temple for its plans. For temple locations, see our guide to Hindu temples in the UAE.
Tuesday is a working day. The tithi starts at 2:33 PM and the main puja window opens at 4:17 PM, so you can take the sankalp in the morning, work as usual, and return home for the evening puja. Plan to be home by about 4:00 PM, or do a shorter puja after work if you can reach home before the window closes at 6:58 PM.
Fasting in the heat. UAE weather in May is warm, so drink plenty of water before and after the fast if your tradition allows it, and choose a fruit and milk fast if a full fast is not comfortable.
Lamps in apartments. Use a small diya on a metal plate, keep it away from curtains, and check your building rules on open flames and incense.
