What is Mohini Ekadashi?
Mohini Ekadashi honours Lord Vishnu in his enchanting Mohini avatar. In the traditional account from the Puranas, Vishnu took the form of Mohini during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan) to guide the nectar of immortality to the devas. The Ekadashi that follows in Vaishakha carries her name.
Devotees keep the day with fasting, prayer and quiet reflection. Many families read or listen to the Mohini Ekadashi Vrat Katha, and the day is seen as a time to set a steady intention for the weeks ahead, with devotion and self-discipline as the focus.
How to observe the Mohini Ekadashi vrat
The vrat begins at sunrise on 16 May and is broken after sunrise on 17 May, inside the parana window of 5:34 AM to 8:15 AM in Dubai. Because Dwadashi ends at 2:58 PM on 17 May, the parana window falls comfortably inside it.
- Bathe early on 16 May, wear clean clothes and take a simple sankalp for the fast.
- Place an image of Lord Vishnu or Lakshmi Narayana on a clean cloth and light a ghee lamp.
- Offer flowers, tulsi leaves, chandan and incense, and a little fruit as naivedyam.
- Recite the Vishnu Sahasranama, a few Vishnu mantras, or listen to the Vrat Katha.
- Close the evening with aarti using camphor, then keep the rest of the day calm and simple.
- On 17 May, bathe, offer a short prayer and break the fast between 5:34 AM and 8:15 AM.
Your family or community tradition always comes first. Fasting is a personal choice: some families keep a fruit-and-milk fast, some keep water only, and others simply avoid grains and beans. Anyone with a health condition, pregnant or elderly should follow their own doctor's advice and keep the fast in a form that suits them.

Mohini Ekadashi in the UAE
Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ajman have many families who keep Ekadashi, often together with a Vishnu satsang or Sahasranama path. Programmes vary each year, so ask your local group or temple for its plans. For temple locations, see our guide to Hindu temples in the UAE.
Sunday is a working day for many UAE residents. The UAE work week runs Monday to Friday, so 16 May falls on a weekend day for most and the vrat is easy to keep at home. The parana on Monday 17 May opens at 5:34 AM, which suits an early prayer before the commute.
Lamps in apartments. Use a small diya on a metal plate, keep it away from curtains, and check your building rules on open flames and incense.
