Krishna Janmashtami 2026 in UAE: Date, Nishita Muhurat and Masik Dates

Krishna Janmashtami 2026 date and Nishita puja muhurat for Dubai and the UAE - Divine Sansar

Krishna Janmashtami 2026 falls on Friday, 4 September 2026. In the UAE the Nishita Puja Muhurat runs from 11:55 PM on 4 September to 12:41 AM on 5 September. The Ashtami Tithi begins at 12:55 AM on 4 September and ends at 10:43 PM the same night.

These timings are calculated for Dubai using sidereal Lahiri panchang, so they are not the IST times published on most Indian sites. Dahi Handi follows on Saturday, 5 September.

If you are keeping the vrat, you break it after the midnight puja. That means the fast runs through a working Friday and ends in the early hours of the weekend - the kindest shape this festival has taken in several years.

Why the UAE timing differs from India

Janmashtami is set by the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada, not by a calendar date. A tithi begins and ends at a precise astronomical moment, and that moment falls at a different clock time in Dubai than it does in Delhi or Mumbai.

The calendar date matches India this year. The Nishita muhurat does not. If you are performing the abhishek at home in Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi or Ajman, use the 11:55 PM window above rather than the IST timing you will see elsewhere.

How to observe Janmashtami at home

  • Prepare the space. Clean the mandir, lay a fresh yellow aasan, and set the Krishna murti or photo frame at the centre. Yellow and blue are the colours of the day.
  • Keep the vrat. Most devotees fast from sunrise on the 4th until after the midnight puja. A partial fast on fruit, milk and water is equally accepted, and children and anyone unwell are not expected to keep it.
  • Evening bhajan. From sunset the household gathers for bhajans and the Krishna katha. This is the part children remember, so it is worth making time for.
  • Midnight abhishek. At the Nishita muhurat, bathe the murti with water, milk, curd, honey and ghee. Dress it, offer the mor pankh and the bansuri, and place makhan mishri as bhog.
  • Aarti and bhog. Offer the aarti with the ghanti, then distribute the prasad. The fast is broken here.
  • Dahi Handi. The next day belongs to the handi and to Krishna the child rather than Krishna the divine.

What you need for the puja

The midnight abhishek asks for more than a usual weekday aarti - panchamrit needs five separate offerings, and the murti needs to be dressed. Working through a list on the day itself is how people end up missing an item.

The Shri Krishna Pooja Box holds 49 items for the abhishek and aarti in one kit, packed to order and delivered across the Emirates. If you are assembling your own, the Shri Krishna collection carries the Gangajal, sandal attar, chandan tilak, brass thali, morpankh ghanti and Tulsi malas the vidhi calls for.

For delivery before the 4th, order by Wednesday 2 September. Cash on delivery and Tabby are both available at checkout.

What Janmashtami marks

Krishna was born at midnight in a prison cell in Mathura, to Devaki and Vasudeva, with his uncle Kansa waiting to kill him. That is why the puja is held at midnight rather than at dawn, and why the celebration carries relief in it as much as joy.

Vasudeva carried the newborn across the Yamuna that same night to Gokul, where Yashoda raised him as her own. The story of the escape, the river parting, and the exchange of children is the reason the night itself matters, not only the day.

Devotees keep the vrat as an act of attention rather than deprivation. The fast, the bhajans and the midnight abhishek are ways of staying awake for an arrival.

Friday, 4 September 2026. The Nishita Puja Muhurat is from 11:55 PM on the 4th to 12:41 AM on the 5th, calculated for Dubai.

Is Janmashtami on the same date in the UAE and India in 2026?

The date is the same, 4 September, but the muhurat timings differ because the tithi begins and ends at a different clock time in the Gulf. Use the Dubai timings if you are performing the puja here.

What time is the Janmashtami puja?

The main puja is the Nishita puja at midnight, between 11:55 PM and 12:41 AM. Evening bhajans usually begin after sunset and continue until then.

When do I break the Janmashtami fast?

After the midnight puja and the aarti, in the early hours of 5 September. Some families wait until the Ashtami Tithi ends and break it the following morning instead - both are accepted.

What is Masik Krishna Janmashtami?

The Ashtami of Krishna Paksha recurs every lunar month, and devotees who wish to mark Krishna's birth more often observe it monthly on a smaller scale. The 2026 dates are in the table above.

What do I need for Janmashtami puja at home?

Gangajal, milk, curd, honey and ghee for the panchamrit abhishek, a thali and ghanti, chandan tilak, mor pankh, fresh flowers, a yellow aasan, and makhan mishri for bhog. The Shri Krishna Pooja Box gathers 49 of these items in one kit.

Can I do Janmashtami puja without a Laddu Gopal murti?

Yes. A Krishna photo frame or any image of the deity is sufficient. The abhishek can be offered to the frame, and many households in the UAE do exactly this.

What comes after Janmashtami?

Dahi Handi on Saturday 5 September, then Ganesh Chaturthi on 14 September and Radha Ashtami on 19 September. The full year is on our Hindu calendar.
