Why Radha Is Worshipped First

Radha Ashtami celebrates the birth of Radha Rani in Barsana, on the eighth day of Shukla Paksha in Bhadrapada. In the Vaishnava traditions she is not simply Krishna's beloved but his hladini shakti, the very energy of his joy, and this is why her name is spoken before his. Radhe Krishna, never the reverse.

The story told is that Radha was not born in the ordinary way. Vrishabhanu and Kirti found her on a lotus at Barsana, and her eyes stayed closed until Krishna himself was brought before her. It is a small detail and it carries the whole theology of the day: she opened her eyes for him alone.

Devotees hold that Krishna is reached through Radha rather than around her. Worship offered to her on this day is understood to reach him more surely than worship offered to him directly.

Radha Ashtami 2026 Timings for the UAE

Radha was born at midday, which is why the puja is performed in the Madhyahna period rather than at midnight as on Janmashtami. In 2026 this falls on a Saturday, so most families in the UAE can keep the proper muhurat without adjusting anything.

Radha Ashtami Puja Vidhi

1. Bathe early and wear clean clothes. Yellow, pink and red are the colours associated with Radha Rani.
2. Clean the mandir and set a chowki with a fresh cloth for Radha Krishna.
3. Perform abhishek of the murti with panchamrit, then with clean water, and dry it gently.
4. Dress the murti in fresh vastra and offer jewellery, a small mukut and fresh flowers. Radha is traditionally offered white and pink flowers.
5. Take the sankalp and light the deepak.
6. Offer chandan, akshat, roli, dhoop, tulsi patra and naivedhya. Kheer, makhan mishri and panjiri are the traditional bhog.
7. Chant the Radha Ashtami mantras or recite the Radha Chalisa. Om Hreem Radhikaye Namah is the simplest for a home puja.
8. Read the Radha Ashtami Vrat Katha, then perform aarti and distribute prasad.

The Vrat

The vrat is optional and lighter than Janmashtami. Many devotees keep a phalahar fast through the day and break it after the midday puja. Some keep only a partial fast, avoiding grains. Neither is considered lesser.

What is considered essential is that the fast is broken with prasad from the puja rather than with an ordinary meal.

Keeping Radha Ashtami in the UAE

The one thing worth preparing in advance is tulsi. No Radha Krishna puja is complete without tulsi patra, and fresh tulsi is not reliably available in UAE supermarkets. A tulsi plant kept at home solves this for the whole year, and it is what most devoted families here end up doing.

Fresh flowers are the other consideration. Order for Saturday morning delivery rather than buying Friday evening, since the September heat is unkind to flowers left overnight.
