The one timing that matters in the UAE: stars, not the moon
Ahoi Ashtami is often described as a fast broken at moonrise, the way Karwa Chauth is. In Dubai on 1 November 2026 the moon does not rise until 11:49 PM. Waiting for it means a fast of more than seventeen hours and a puja close to midnight.
This is why the older and far more common practice is arghya to the stars. Once the first stars are clearly visible after sunset, which is around 06:02 PM, water is offered, the katha is completed, and the fast is broken. Both are correct. Families who have always waited for the moon can continue to, but nobody needs to start.
If your household follows the moon, note that the moonrise on 1 November technically belongs to the Ashtami night, so the fast is broken on the same calendar day, not after midnight.

The date moves because it is fixed to Kartika Krishna Ashtami, the eighth day of the waning fortnight. In Gujarat and Maharashtra, where the Amanta calendar is used, the same day falls in the month of Ashwin. The observance is identical.
What Ahoi Ashtami is
Ahoi Mata is a form of Parvati worshipped specifically as a protector of children. Mothers keep a nirjala or partial fast through the day and perform the puja in the evening in front of an image of the goddess drawn with eight corners, the Ashtha Koshthak, one for each day of the Ashtami tithi.
Beside her is drawn Syahu, the porcupine, with her seven young. The story behind that pairing is below. Traditionally the fast was kept for sons; today it is kept for all children, and many women also keep it while hoping to conceive.
Ahoi Ashtami is also called Ahoi Aathe, and is strongest in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab and Delhi, which is exactly the population that fills Bur Dubai, Karama and Al Nahda.
Ahoi Ashtami puja vidhi, step by step
- Sankalp at sunrise. Bathe before 06:27 AM, face east, and take the sankalp naming your children. The fast begins from that moment.
- Set the wall image in the afternoon. Draw Ahoi Mata with eight corners in geru or kumkum on a clean wall, or fix an A4 poster on the altar wall if drawing is not practical. Draw or place Syahu and her seven young beside her.
- Place the kalash on the left. An earthen or copper kalash filled with water, a swastika drawn on it in roli, and moli tied around the neck. This water is kept for the arghya later.
- Lay the offerings. Rice, radish, singhara or water chestnut, seasonal fruit, and a plate of grains. Jow and wheat are the usual grains. Cooked bhog is puri, halwa and pua.
- Begin the puja in the muhurat. From 05:39 PM. Light the diya, offer kumkum, akshat, flowers and dhoop, then the bhog.
- Read the katha with seven grains in hand. The eldest woman reads, the rest listen holding seven grains of wheat. The grains are kept, not thrown.
- Offer arghya from 06:02 PM. Step outside or to the balcony, look for the first stars, and offer water from the kalash. Households that follow moonrise wait until 11:49 PM.
- Aarti, then break the fast. Distribute the bhog and the coins placed before the goddess to the children of the house first.
Some families use a silver Syau, a small pendant form of Ahoi Mata worshipped with milk, akshat and roli, then worn on a thread with two silver pearls from this day until Diwali. Where that thread is a family heirloom, a pearl or a coin is added each year for each new member.

The Ahoi Ashtami vrat katha
A moneylender lived in a town with seven sons, seven daughters-in-law and one daughter. Before Diwali the women went to the forest to dig clean soil for replastering the house. The daughter's spade struck the den of a porcupine, Syahu, and killed one of her young.
Syahu Mata cursed her: your womb will be bound. The daughter begged her sisters-in-law to take the curse in her place, and the youngest agreed. From then on every child born to the youngest daughter-in-law died within seven days.
After seven such losses she asked a pandit what to do. He told her to serve Surahi, the sacred cow, with a whole heart. Surahi was pleased and set out to take her to Syahu Mata. Resting on the way, the daughter-in-law saw a snake about to strike the young of Garuda Pankhini and killed it. Garuda returned, saw the blood, and attacked her, until the young explained that she had saved them. Garuda then carried her the rest of the way herself.
Syahu Mata, hearing all of it, blessed her with seven sons and seven daughters-in-law, and her house filled again.
Ahoi means to turn the anhoni into the honi, to make what could not happen, happen. That is what the youngest daughter-in-law did by taking a curse that was not hers, and it is what mothers ask for when they keep this fast.

Ahoi Ashtami in the UAE
1 November 2026 is a Sunday, which is the easiest possible draw. The puja window opens at 05:39 PM, well after most families are home, and the whole observance can be finished by seven in the evening.
A few things that are specific to keeping this vrat here rather than in India:
- Drawing on the wall. Most UAE tenancy contracts make geru on a painted wall a bad idea. An A4 Ahoi Mata poster propped at the back of the altar is the accepted substitute and is what the pooja box includes.
- Finding the stars. Downtown, Marina and Business Bay have enough light and haze that the first stars are hard to pick out at 06:02 PM. A balcony facing away from the towers helps, and so does looking east rather than west. If you cannot see them, the timing itself is what the vrat is anchored to.
- Open flame. Many buildings in Dubai and Sharjah restrict flame in common areas and on balconies. Keep the diya on the altar tray indoors and away from curtains.
- Singhara and radish. Water chestnut is seasonal and easiest to find at Al Aweer market and the Indian grocers in Karama and Al Nahda in the week before. Radish is available year round.
- Where to gather. The Shiva and Krishna temples in Bur Dubai and the temple in Jebel Ali usually hold an evening Ahoi katha. Community WhatsApp groups in Sharjah, Ajman and Abu Dhabi organise smaller building-level readings, which suits a fast that ends before seven.
- Fasting in this climate. Even in November the days are warm. Hydrate well the night before and after, and if a nirjala fast is not right for you, a phalahari fast with fruit and water is a long-accepted form. Keep it in a way you can sustain.
Ahoi Ashtami and Karwa Chauth: what is different
The two are close in form and four days apart, so they are constantly confused. Karwa Chauth 2026 is Thursday 29 October; Ahoi Ashtami is Sunday 1 November.
- Karwa Chauth is kept by wives for their husbands. Ahoi Ashtami is kept by mothers for their children.
- Karwa Chauth ends at moonrise, which in 2026 is a workable 08:29 PM. Ahoi Ashtami is normally ended at star-sighting, because its moon is near midnight.
- Karwa Chauth centres on the karwa and the sieve. Ahoi Ashtami centres on the eight-cornered wall image and the kalash.
- The solah shringar, sargi and the reading of a katha are common to both, which is why the same shringar box serves for either.

Ahoi Ashtami asks for very little: a wall, a pot of water, a lamp, a story read out loud, and a mother's attention held for one day on her children. In a UAE apartment that is a poster on the altar, a copper kalash, and everyone home by six on a Sunday evening.
Set the alarm for the sankalp before 06:27 AM, keep the puja tray ready by afternoon, and step out at 06:02 PM to look for the first star.
