Most vrats are transactional in structure: a fast is kept, a boon is asked. Ahoi Ashtami is unusual because the story at its centre is about a woman taking on a curse that was not hers, to spare someone else. The youngest daughter-in-law volunteers for a punishment meant for her sister-in-law, loses seven children to it, and is restored only after years of patient service.
That is the shape of the prayer. Not "give me", but "let it fall on me instead". Mothers who keep this fast are not bargaining for prosperity; they are offering their own comfort for a day in exchange for their children's safety. It is the reason the fast is traditionally nirjala, without even water, and the reason it ends only when the sky is checked for the first star.
The word itself carries it. Ahoi comes from turning the anhoni, the thing that cannot happen, into the honi, the thing that does. The goddess is invoked exactly at the point where a mother has run out of ordinary options.

The wall
Geru on a rented wall is not worth the deposit. An A4 Ahoi Mata poster stood at the back of the altar, or fixed with removable tape to the inside of a cupboard door that stays open through the puja, is the accepted substitute and the one most UAE families have settled on. The stars
Stars are officially visible from 06:02 PM on 1 November 2026. In Downtown, Marina, Business Bay and Reem Island the glare and haze usually mean you will not see one. Face east, away from the towers, and give it a few minutes. If nothing appears, the timing itself is what the vrat is anchored to. Nobody is expected to fast until midnight because a building was in the way.
The fast, in this climate
November days here are still warm. Drink well the night before and eat properly after. A phalahari fast with fruit and water is a long-established form and is what a great many mothers keep, particularly those working a full Sunday shift or feeding an infant. The vrat is a matter of intention held through the day; the strictness of the form is yours to choose.
Bringing the children in
The single best thing about Ahoi Ashtami in a diaspora household is that the day is explicitly about the children, so they can be part of it without being spectators. Let them lay the grains, place the radish, hold the seven wheat grains during the katha, and receive the bhog first. Children who grow up here often meet these festivals only as food and clothes. This one has a story you can tell them in five minutes and a role they can hold in their hands.
Where families gather
The Bur Dubai temple complex and the Jebel Ali temple typically hold an evening Ahoi katha, and the timing works: the puja window opens at 05:39 PM and the whole thing is done by seven. In Sharjah, Ajman and Abu Dhabi it is more often organised through building and community WhatsApp groups, five or six mothers in one flat, one of them reading. What to cook
The bhog is puri, halwa and pua, offered to the goddess and then eaten together once the fast is broken. Pua, the sweet fried pancake of wheat flour and jaggery, is the one most closely tied to this day and the one most likely to be new to children raised here.
Alongside the bhog, families lay out radish, singhara, seasonal fruit and a plate of jow and rice for the offering itself. If you are cooking for a small household, halwa and eight puris is enough; the point is that it is made at home on a day the cook has not eaten.
Some families break the fast on water from the kalash and a piece of fruit first, then eat properly half an hour later. After a full day without water that is the kinder order.
If this is your first year
- Decide the night before whether you are keeping nirjala or phalahari, and tell your family, so nobody offers you tea at eleven.
- Take the sankalp after bathing, before sunrise at 06:27 AM, naming your children.
- Set the altar in the afternoon while you still have energy: poster, kalash, thali, diya, offerings.
- Start the puja at 05:39 PM. Read the katha aloud even if you are alone.

- Give the bhog and coins to the children, then eat.
