The Kamalgatta Mala is a 108-bead japa mala hand-strung from whole dried lotus seeds (kamal gatta), with one sumeru bead and a red cotton tassel. It is the mala traditionally chosen for Maa Lakshmi mantra jaap, because the lotus is her seat and her name - Kamala, the one who dwells in the lotus. Each mala comes in a velvet pouch and is delivered across the UAE.

Every bead is a real lotus seed, so no two are identical. The mala is about 90 cm long, and each bead is a matte charcoal-grey seed of roughly 10-12 mm with small natural marks and tonal variation, knotted on red thread so the beads do not rub against one another while you chant.

What is a kamalgatta?

Kamalgatta is the hard, dried seed of the sacred lotus, Nelumbo nucifera. Once it ripens in the seed head of the flower, the seed coat turns dark and almost stone-hard, which is what lets it be drilled and strung into a mala that lasts for years of daily use.

The same seeds are offered loose in Lakshmi puja and in Shri Suktam havan, which is why many families keep both a kamalgatta mala for jaap and a small set of seeds for the altar.

Why devotees choose a kamalgatta mala

  • For Lakshmi sadhana: the traditional mala for Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah, Shri Suktam and Kanakdhara Stotram.
  • For Diwali and Dhanteras jaap: many households begin a 108 count on Lakshmi Puja night and continue it on Fridays through the year.
  • For steady, focused practice: the seeds are light and slightly larger than tulsi beads, so they are easy to count by touch during long sessions.
  • Natural and unpolished: no lacquer, dye or plastic - just lotus seed and cotton thread.

What you receive

  • 1 Kamalgatta Mala - 108 lotus seed beads + 1 sumeru bead
  • Mala length approx. 90 cm
  • Bead size approx. 10-12 mm (natural variation)
  • Knotted on red cotton thread with a red tassel
  • Velvet pouch for storage

How to use your kamalgatta mala

  1. Before first use, sprinkle a few drops of Gangajal on the mala and keep it at your mandir overnight.
  2. Sit facing east or north. Hold the mala in your right hand, draped over the middle finger.
  3. Move one bead towards you with your thumb for each mantra, keeping the index finger lifted.
  4. When you reach the sumeru, do not cross it. Turn the mala and begin the next round.
  5. Return the mala to its velvet pouch after jaap, and keep it apart from everyday jewellery.

A Gomukhi japa bag keeps the mala covered while you chant, and a Kamalgatta set of 11 seeds completes the Lakshmi altar. For the full puja sequence, read our Maa Lakshmi Puja Vidhi guide.

Care

Keep the mala dry and away from perfume and oils, as lotus seed is a natural material. If the thread loosens after long use, the mala can be re-strung by any local mala maker. Small surface marks on the seeds are natural and are not defects.

Frequently asked questions

Which mantra is chanted on a kamalgatta mala?

It is traditionally used for Maa Lakshmi mantras, such as Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah, Shri Suktam and Kanakdhara Stotram. Many devotees also use it for Kuber mantra jaap on Dhanteras.

How many beads does the mala have?

108 lotus seed beads plus one sumeru bead, which marks the start and end of each round. The full mala is about 90 cm long.

Are the beads real lotus seeds?

Yes. Every bead is a whole dried lotus seed. That is why the size, shade and surface vary slightly from bead to bead, which is a sign of a natural mala.

Can I use the kamalgatta mala every day?

Yes. Many people use it daily, while others keep it especially for Friday Lakshmi jaap, Diwali and Sharad Purnima. Store it in its velvet pouch between sessions.

Can I wear a kamalgatta mala?

It is made as a japa mala for counting mantras rather than as jewellery. If you do wear it, remove it before bathing and sleeping so the thread stays strong.

What is the difference between a kamalgatta mala and a tulsi mala?

Tulsi is the mala of Vishnu and Krishna devotion, while kamalgatta is traditionally linked with Maa Lakshmi. The lotus seed beads are also larger and lighter in feel than tulsi beads.

Can I gift a kamalgatta mala for Diwali?

Yes. It arrives in a velvet pouch, which makes it a thoughtful Diwali or griha pravesh gift for anyone who does Lakshmi puja at home.
