Reading the iconography

Maa Durga sits side-saddle on a tiger, which is why devotees call her Sherawali, the one who rides the sher. The tiger is her strength held in perfect control. She is calm and smiling because the power she carries is used only to protect.

Her front right hand is raised in abhaya mudra, the gesture that says "do not fear". Her left hand rests in her lap holding a shankh, the conch whose sound opened the battle with Mahishasura. The lotus in her upper hand stands for purity rising untouched out of the world, and the weapons in her other hands were given to her by the devas so she could defeat the demon none of them could overcome.

Behind her head is the golden prabhamandal, the halo of divine light, and she wears the red saree and gold mukut of a married goddess. This is the form many families invite home for the nine nights, as Mata Rani who comes to stay.

Worshipping Maa Durga at home

Navratri is the main time for Durga worship, both Sharad Navratri in autumn and Chaitra Navratri in spring. Families place the murti on a red cloth beside the kalash on the day of ghatasthapana, keep an akhand jyoti burning and offer a fresh chunri. Durga Ashtami and Mahanavami bring kanya pujan, and Vijayadashami closes the festival.

For daily worship, place the murti facing east or north on a clean red cloth. Offer a diya, red flowers such as hibiscus or rose, kumkum, incense and a simple bhog. Many devotees chant "Om Dum Durgayai Namah" 108 times, or read the Durga Chalisa on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Caring for a polyresin murti

Polyresin holds fine detail and is far less fragile than clay or plaster, which makes it a good choice for homes with children. Wipe it with a soft dry cloth. Do not immerse it in water or use it for jal or milk abhishek, and offer abhishek to a separate kalash instead. Keep it out of direct afternoon sun on a balcony, as UAE summer heat can dull the gloss over time.
