This 10 Diya Urli is a round brass-finish metal urli with ten small diyas set around a 12 cm centre bowl. Fill the diyas with ghee or oil and a cotton wick, float flowers in the centre, and you have a complete Diwali centrepiece in one piece. Every urli comes with one floating lotus on a lily pad, free.

An urli (also called uruli or urali) is the wide, shallow bowl of South Indian homes, traditionally filled with water and flowers at the entrance or beside the mandir to welcome guests and Lakshmi ji. This design rings the urli with its own ring of lamps, so the water and the flames sit together as one offering of light.

How to use it

Set the urli on a flat, heat-safe surface. Pour a little ghee or diya oil into each lamp and lay a cotton wick along the spout so the tip rests on the lip. Half-fill the centre bowl with water and float the lotus, marigold heads or rose petals.

Light the diyas from one side and move round, so you are never reaching across a lit flame. Our long Rui Batti cotton wicks lie neatly along the spout of each diya.

Care

This is metal with a brass finish, not solid brass. Empty the water after use and wipe the urli completely dry with a soft cloth, as water left standing can mark the finish over time. Avoid scrubbers, lemon or brass polish, which will wear the coating. Wipe out old oil once the diyas have cooled.

Which lotus comes free?

Can I put water in the centre bowl?

Yes, that is what it is for. Float flowers, petals or the free lotus, and empty and dry the bowl afterwards.

What goes in the diyas?

Ghee or any diya oil with a cotton wick. Pour a small amount so the oil does not spill over the lip.

Can I leave it lit unattended?

Please do not. Keep it away from curtains and children, and put the flames out before leaving the room. The metal gets warm while the diyas burn.
