Rishi Panchami Puja Vidhi

1. Bathe early. Traditionally the bath is taken with apamarga (chirchita) leaves, though clean water with a little haldi is used where the plant is not available.
2. Wear clean, preferably new or freshly washed clothes.
3. Set a chowki with a clean cloth and place images or symbolic representations of the Sapta Rishi and Arundhati on it.
4. Take the sankalp for the vrat.
5. Offer water, akshat, haldi, kumkum, chandan, flowers, dhoop and deepak. Fruit and a sattvic naivedhya are offered after.
6. Read the Rishi Panchami Vrat Katha.
7. Close with the aarti, then feed a brahmin or offer food in charity if you are able.

The Vrat Food Rule Most People Get Wrong

On Rishi Panchami the meal taken is not the usual vrat food. The tradition is to eat only what has grown without being ploughed, which rules out grains from cultivated fields. The classic meal is sama ke chawal or a preparation of taro leaves, with vegetables that grow above ground, and it is eaten once, after the puja.

Salt is often avoided, and in many families the meal is taken without onion or garlic as a matter of course. Curd and milk are permitted.
