Rishi Panchami 2026 falls on Tuesday, 15 September 2026. The puja muhurat for Dubai is 11:01 AM to 01:28 PM. It comes the day after Ganesh Chaturthi, on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha in Bhadrapada.
All timings on this page are calculated for Dubai in Gulf Standard Time, not IST.
What Rishi Panchami Is For
Rishi Panchami is a day of gratitude to the Sapta Rishi, the seven sages who carried knowledge into the world. It is kept mainly by women, as a vrat of purification and of thanks, and it closes the short sequence that runs from Hartalika Teej through Ganesh Chaturthi.
The seven honoured on this day are Kashyapa, Atri, Bharadvaja, Vishvamitra, Gautama, Jamadagni and Vashishtha. Arundhati, wife of Vashishtha, is worshipped alongside them, and she is the reason the vrat is associated with married women in particular.
Traditionally the vrat is understood as prayaschitta, an observance that clears any inadvertent transgression of ritual purity over the past year. That framing matters less to most families now than the simpler idea behind it: a day set aside to acknowledge the people who preserved the knowledge you live by.
Rishi Panchami 2026 Timings for the UAE
| Observance | Date and Time (Dubai) |
| Rishi Panchami 2026 | Tuesday, 15 September 2026 |
| Puja Muhurat | 11:01 AM to 01:28 PM |
The window is a midday one, which for a Tuesday in the UAE means most working women will need to shift it. A short sankalp in the morning with the full puja in the evening is the accepted adjustment.
Rishi Panchami Puja Vidhi
- Bathe early. Traditionally the bath is taken with apamarga (chirchita) leaves, though clean water with a little haldi is used where the plant is not available.
- Wear clean, preferably new or freshly washed clothes.
- Set a chowki with a clean cloth and place images or symbolic representations of the Sapta Rishi and Arundhati on it.
- Take the sankalp for the vrat.
- Offer water, akshat, haldi, kumkum, chandan, flowers, dhoop and deepak. Fruit and a sattvic naivedhya are offered after.
- Read the Rishi Panchami Vrat Katha.
- Close with the aarti, then feed a brahmin or offer food in charity if you are able.
The Vrat Food Rule Most People Get Wrong
On Rishi Panchami the meal taken is not the usual vrat food. The tradition is to eat only what has grown without being ploughed, which rules out grains from cultivated fields. The classic meal is sama ke chawal or a preparation of taro leaves, with vegetables that grow above ground, and it is eaten once, after the puja.
Salt is often avoided, and in many families the meal is taken without onion or garlic as a matter of course. Curd and milk are permitted.
Keeping Rishi Panchami in the UAE
Apamarga leaves are the one item you will not find here, and there is no need to hunt for them. Clean water with haldi, taken with the sankalp said aloud, is what most families in the Emirates do, and it is accepted.
Sama ke chawal and singhare ka atta are stocked by the Indian grocers in Karama and Bur Dubai, but they sell out in the week around Ganesh Chaturthi when every household is buying vrat provisions at once. Buy them when you buy your Ganesh samagri, not on the day.
Because Rishi Panchami falls the day after Ganesh Chaturthi, the practical approach is to treat the two as one shopping trip. Our pooja samagri range covers the haldi, kumkum, chandan, akshat and dhoop this vidhi calls for, and the Havan Pooja Box is worth keeping in the house if your family performs a havan alongside the vrat.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is Rishi Panchami 2026?
Tuesday, 15 September 2026, with a Dubai puja muhurat of 11:01 AM to 01:28 PM.
Who keeps the Rishi Panchami vrat?
It is kept mainly by women, married and unmarried. Men observe it in some communities as a day of gratitude to the rishis, without the food restrictions.
What can I eat on Rishi Panchami?
One meal after the puja, made from food that grows without ploughing. Sama ke chawal, taro leaves, above ground vegetables, curd and milk are the usual choices. Cultivated grains and, in many families, salt are avoided.
Can I keep the vrat if I cannot get apamarga leaves?
Yes. Bathing in clean water with a little haldi, having taken the sankalp, is what nearly every family outside India does. The intention carries the observance.
Is Rishi Panchami connected to Ganesh Chaturthi?
They fall on consecutive tithis and share the same festival week, but they are separate observances. Ganesh Chaturthi honours Lord Ganesha, Rishi Panchami honours the Sapta Rishi.
Can I keep the vrat during my period?
The vrat is traditionally described as one of purification, and practice varies widely by family and community. Many households have set aside the older restrictions entirely. This is a question for your own family and pandit rather than a rule with a single answer.
Why is the date different from the one my family in India follows?
Tithis begin and end at fixed astronomical moments, which fall at different clock times in Gulf Standard Time than in IST. The date and muhurat here are calculated for Dubai.
