The Story Behind Nag Panchami
Nag Panchami is linked to the epic Mahabharata. King Janamejaya performed a great sacrifice to destroy the serpent race after his father, King Parikshit, died from a snake bite. The sage Astika intervened and persuaded the king to spare the Nagas, and the day is remembered as a day of reverence and restraint.
Serpents also hold a place in Hindu iconography. Lord Shiva wears a snake around his neck, and Lord Vishnu rests on the serpent Shesha. To understand more about Shiva, read our guide on how Lord Shiva was born, and if you keep the Shravan fasts, see our Sawan Somwar fasting rules.
Customs and Meaning Today
Many households avoid digging the soil or cutting vegetables with a knife on this day, out of respect for creatures living below the ground. Snakes are also valued for keeping rodent populations in balance, and the festival encourages compassion towards all living beings. Telugu families observe a similar day at a different time of year, which you can read about in our Nagula Chavithi guide.
Nag Panchami 2027 FAQ
When is Nag Panchami in 2027?
Nag Panchami falls on Friday, 6 August 2027. Panchami tithi begins at 12:57 AM on 6 August and ends at 10:52 PM the same day in Dubai.
What is the Nag Panchami puja time in Dubai?
The puja muhurat in Dubai is 5:49 AM to 8:27 AM on 6 August 2027, a window of 2 hours 38 minutes. The same timings serve Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ajman, which differ from Dubai by only a few minutes.
Why do UAE timings differ from Indian listings?
Indian listings are written in Indian Standard Time, which is 90 minutes ahead of UAE time, and tithi is calculated against local sunrise. A morning window taken from an Indian source can therefore be out by around an hour and a half for a family in Dubai.
Is Nag Panchami on a different date in Gujarat?
Yes. Gujarat counts the lunar month differently, and the regional calendar places Nag Panchami there on Sunday, 22 August 2027. Families in the UAE who follow Gujarati tradition may prefer that date.
How do we observe Nag Panchami in the UAE without live snakes?
Worship an idol, a picture or a silver or clay naga at home. Please never offer milk to a live snake, as milk can harm it. Offering the milk in a small bowl in front of the image keeps the devotion and protects the animal.
What can I offer to Nag Devta?
Traditional offerings are milk, haldi, kumkum, flowers, incense and a lit lamp. Some families also offer sweets such as kheer. Keep the offering simple and sincere, since intention matters more than quantity.
Do I need to fast on Nag Panchami?
Many devotees keep a partial or full fast and eat only after the puja. It is a personal choice, so follow your own family custom and your own comfort.
What is the link between Nag Panchami and Kaal Sarp Dosha?
In Vedic astrology, Kaal Sarp Dosha is a planetary pattern that many families associate with the day, and prayers to the serpent deities are traditionally offered for peace and balance. This is a matter of faith and tradition rather than a guaranteed outcome, and it is best discussed with a trusted pandit or astrologer.
