Kanya Pujan is the moment Navratri stops being about a statue and starts being about a person. For nine days you have been offering flowers and light to Maa Durga in her nine forms. On the last morning you invite her to sit on your floor, eat your halwa and let you touch her feet. The Devi Bhagavata Purana is direct about it: without kanya pujan, the nine days of fasting are incomplete.
Also called Kumari Puja, Kanjak or Kanjika depending on where your family is from, the ritual is the same everywhere. Small girls are received as living Navadurga, fed, dressed and sent home with gifts.
Kanya Pujan 2026 dates in the UAE
2026 is a year to check the calendar rather than assume. Saptami repeats on 17 and 18 October, which is why the nine nights of Sharad Navratri stretch across ten days from Sunday 11 October to Tuesday 20 October. It also means Ashtami and Navami merge onto one morning. Both fall on Monday 19 October, with Ashtami ending at 09:21 AM and Navami starting at that same instant and running to 11:20 AM on Tuesday 20 October.

The tithi ends at a single instant, so 09:21 AM on the 19th and 11:20 AM on the 20th are the same clock times in Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah and Abu Dhabi. Only sunrise shifts, by about three minutes across the emirates. If you want the pujan inside the tithi, that end time is your deadline, not a suggestion.
UAE note
Both mornings are working days here. Ashtami is a Monday and Navami a Tuesday, and both cut off before the school run has finished settling. Families across Dubai and Sharjah handle this the same way every year: cook the night before, invite the girls for around seven in the morning, and finish by half past eight. If that is impossible, do the pujan later in the day with a clear conscience. A sincere pujan at four in the afternoon is worth more than a rushed one at nine.

Why little girls
The reasoning is older than the ritual. Hindu thought holds that the divine is present in every person but obscured in most of us by wanting, fearing and calculating. A child has not built those layers yet. Worship offered to a small girl reaches the Goddess without the usual interference.
There is a story behind it too. Durga took the form of a young girl to end the demon Kolasura, and the form stayed sacred afterwards. So the girls in your living room are not stand-ins or symbols. For the length of the pujan they are treated as the thing itself.
Which girls, and what age
Nine girls, aged two to ten. Below two a child cannot sit through it, and above ten the tradition considers the girl to have moved into a different stage of life. Each age carries its own name and its own blessing.

In most North Indian homes one small boy is invited alongside the girls, called the Langoor or Batuk Bhairav, taken as Bhairav guarding the Devi. He gets the same food, the same tilak and the same gift. Skipping him is not an error, but including him is the fuller form.
Expert tip
Nine is the number to aim for, not a rule that voids the pujan. Five is widely accepted, and even one girl received properly counts. In a UAE apartment building where neighbours are from six different states, invite ten and expect eight. Nobody has ever been penalised for a small gathering offered with attention.
Kanya Puja Vidhi, step by step
- Invite them the day before. Ask the parents, not the child, and tell them the time clearly. Girls arriving at the door on the morning without warning is how the food runs out.
- Wash their feet. Seat each girl and pour a little water over her feet into a thali, then dry them with a clean cloth. This is padprakshalan and it is the step that turns a meal into a pujan. Gangajal added to the water is traditional.
- Seat them properly. On an aasan, a chowki or a clean mat, never directly on bare floor. Facing east or north if your room allows it.
- Apply tilak. Kumkum on the forehead, then a few grains of unbroken akshat pressed onto it. Tie a red mauli thread on the right wrist.
- Offer flowers and aarti. Circle the lit diya in front of each girl and let the elders of the house take the aarti flame afterwards.
- Serve the bhog. Kala chana, puri and sooji halwa, all made in ghee. Serve the girls first and before anyone in the house eats.
- Give the gifts. A chunri, fruit, stationery, bangles or money, placed in her hands rather than handed to a parent.
- Touch their feet. The women of the house take blessings from the girls before they leave. This is the closing act, and the one people forget.

The bhog: kala chana, puri and halwa
The menu is fixed and it is fixed for a reason. Kala chana soaked overnight and cooked dry with cumin and ajwain. Puris fried fresh, because a soft puri is a sad puri. Sooji halwa in ghee, loose enough to spoon. Everything vegetarian, nothing with onion or garlic, and no salt tasted by the cook before it is offered.

Serve on steel or brass rather than disposable plates. The girls are being received as the Goddess, and paper plates say otherwise louder than anything you will say out loud.
What to give them
A red chunri is the traditional gift and the one that carries the most meaning, since it is the same cloth offered to the Devi herself. Beyond that, families give bangles, hair clips, fruit, notebooks and pens, or a small amount of money. There is no minimum and no competition. What matters is that it goes into the girl's own hands.

What the shastras promise
The Devi Bhagavata and the Kalika Purana both give a phala for the number of girls received. Sources vary in wording and any pandit will tell you the count matters less than the attention, but the traditional list runs: one girl for wellbeing, two for wealth and liberation, three for the three aims of dharma, artha and kama, four for authority, five for learning, six for accomplishment, seven for dominion, eight for abundance, and nine for mastery over all of it.

Doing Kanya Pujan in a UAE home
The practical shape of it changes here and the ritual does not mind. A few things worth knowing.
Finding nine girls. Building WhatsApp groups do most of the work. In Bur Dubai, Karama, Al Nahda and the Sharjah communities this is routine, and a message the week before usually fills the list. Temple noticeboards work too.
Neighbours and noise. Aarti with a bell at seven in the morning in a shared corridor is worth a heads up. Most people are delighted once they know what it is.
Diyas. Many UAE buildings have smoke detectors sensitive enough to object to a large akhand jyot. A single ghee diya on a metal thali, away from the detector, is the sensible version.
Getting the samagri. Order the week before, not the night before. Chunri sets and pooja boxes move fast in the seven days ahead of Ashtami, and the whole of the UAE is buying at once. Immersion. The jau shoots sown at Ghatasthapana are immersed after visarjan. Flowing water is traditional. In the UAE the sea is the usual answer, and taking only the organic material with you is the neighbourly one.

When is Kanya Pujan in 2026?
Both fall on Monday 19 October 2026 this year, because Ashtami and Navami merge. Ashtami tithi ends at 09:21 AM and Navami begins at that instant, running to 11:20 AM on Tuesday 20 October, so a Navami pujan can also be kept on the Tuesday morning. These clock times are the same across all seven emirates.
Should I do it on Ashtami or Navami?
Both are correct and the choice usually follows family custom. Households that keep the full nine day fast tend to do it on Navami and break the fast afterwards. Households observing Ashtami Vrat do it on Ashtami. If your family has no fixed practice, the Ashtami window before 09:21 AM on the 19th is the more common choice in the UAE, because the Tuesday Navami morning collides with Vijayadashami preparations.
What age should the girls be?
Between two and ten years old. Each age from two to ten maps to one of the nine Devi forms, which is where the age range comes from.
What if I cannot find nine girls?
Do it with the number you have. Five is widely accepted and even one girl received with full attention is considered complete. The ritual has never been scored on headcount.
What food is served?
Kala chana, puri and sooji halwa, all cooked in ghee, with no onion or garlic. Serve the girls before anyone in the household eats.
Is a boy included?
In most North Indian traditions yes, one boy joins the girls as the Langoor or Batuk Bhairav and receives the same food, tilak and gift. Other regions do not include him. Either practice is correct.
Can I do Kanya Pujan in the evening?
The tithi is the reason for the morning timing, and finishing before it ends is the preferred form. If work makes that impossible, doing it later the same day is far better than skipping it. Many working families in Dubai do exactly this.
Do I need a pandit?
No. Kanya Pujan is a household ritual performed by the women of the house, and no priest is required at any point.
The point of it
Nine days of fasting, cleaning, cooking and prayer come down to one short act on a working morning: an adult kneeling to wash a six year old's feet. That reversal is the whole teaching. Everything else in Navratri is preparation for it.
