What is Chaitra Navratri?
Chaitra Navratri is the spring Navratri, observed in the Hindu month of Chaitra (March-April). It is one of four Navratris in the Hindu calendar but is considered particularly auspicious as it marks the beginning of the Hindu new year and coincides with Ram Navami on the ninth day β the birth of Lord Rama.
Unlike Sharad Navratri (the autumn festival in October), Chaitra Navratri has a more devotional and introspective character. Fasting, daily puja, recitation of Durga Saptashati, and Kanya Puja on the ninth day are its core practices.

Step-by-Step Navratri Puja Vidhi
Day 1 β Ghatasthapana (Kalash Sthapana)
Clean your puja space thoroughly. Spread red cloth on the chowki. Place a clay pot filled with soil and sow barley seeds β this symbolises growth and abundance over the nine days. Fill the Kalash with water, add coins, flowers, mango leaves, and Gangajal. Place a coconut wrapped in red cloth on top. Establish the Durga idol or image on the chowki. Light the diya and invite Maa Durga with full devotion. The Kalash and barley pot remain on the altar for all nine days.
Daily Puja Routine (Days 1-9)
Each morning: bathe, wear clean clothes, light the diya and agarbatti. Offer kumkum, flowers, chandan, and akshat to Maa Durga. Recite Durga Chalisa or chapters from Durga Saptashati. Perform aarti with camphor. Repeat the aarti in the evening (sandhya aarti). Those observing the fast should break it only after completing the evening aarti.
Day 9 β Kanya Puja (Navami)
On the ninth day, invite nine young girls aged 5-12 to your home as manifestations of the nine Navadurga. Wash their feet, apply tilak, offer them a meal of halwa, puri, and chana. Give them gifts β red chunri, bangles, or a small token. This is considered the most meritorious act of Navratri.
Day 10 β Visarjan
On the tenth day (Ram Navami), thank Maa Durga for her presence. Hold flowers and rice in cupped hands and offer them to the goddess with gratitude. Gently move the Kalash as a mark of conclusion. Immerse the barley shoots in a river, lake, or any flowing water source. Remove the idol from the altar and place it back in its permanent position.

What is the difference between Chaitra Navratri and Sharad Navratri?
Both are nine-night festivals dedicated to Maa Durga. Chaitra Navratri falls in March-April (spring) and ends with Ram Navami. Sharad Navratri falls in September-October (autumn) and ends with Dussehra. Sharad Navratri is more widely celebrated across India, but Chaitra Navratri holds equal spiritual significance.
What is Ghatasthapana and when should it be done?
Ghatasthapana is the ritual establishment of a sacred Kalash (pot) that marks the official beginning of Navratri puja. It should be performed on the first day of Navratri within the auspicious muhurat β ideally in the morning after sunrise. If the morning muhurat is missed, Abhijit Muhurat around midday is also acceptable.
Can we do Navratri puja at home without a pandit?
Yes β Navratri puja is one of the most commonly performed home pujas across India and the diaspora. Follow the vidhi described in this article with sincerity and devotion. The goddess responds to the purity of intention, not the scale of the ritual.
What do we do with the barley shoots after Navratri?
The barley (jau) sown on Ghatasthapana grows over the nine days into small shoots called jwara. After visarjan on the tenth day, these are immersed in a river or any flowing water. In UAE, you can immerse them in the sea or in a flowing water source.
