Ganga Dussehra 2027 in the UAE: Date and Dubai Timings

Ganga Dussehra 2027 date and timings in the UAE - Divine Sansar

Ganga Dussehra 2027 falls on Sunday, 13 June 2027. In Dubai and across the UAE, the Dashami tithi runs from 1:13 AM on 13 June to 12:41 AM on 14 June, so the whole day is available for prayer. All timings on this page are UAE local time, read for Dubai, and they can differ from Indian listings.

Ganga Dussehra, also called Ganga Avataran, marks the descent of the river Ganga to earth on the Dashami of the bright half of the Jyeshtha month. Even far from the river, many families in the UAE mark the day at home with Gangajal, a lamp and a quiet prayer.

How to Observe Ganga Dussehra at Home in the UAE

The traditional observance is a holy dip in the Ganga, charity and prayer. Since the river is far away, a home observance keeps the same spirit.

  1. Wake early, bathe and dress in clean clothes.
  2. Add a few drops of Gangajal to your bathing water or sprinkle it around your pooja space with a short prayer.
  3. Light a lamp and offer flowers and incense before an image of Goddess Ganga.
  4. Chant the Ganga Stotra or a simple prayer such as Om Namah Shivaya in her honour.
  5. Perform a small aarti with camphor and share prasad with the family.
  6. Give something in charity, such as food, water or clothing, since daan is a central part of the day.

Many families offer ten of each item, such as ten flowers or ten betel leaves, because the name Dussehra is linked to the number ten (dasha).

The Story Behind Ganga Dussehra

According to tradition, King Bhagirath performed severe penance so that the Ganga would leave heaven and free the souls of his ancestors. Her force was too great for the earth, so Lord Shiva held her in his locks and released her gently. The river that reached the plains is the one millions of devotees honour today.

The name is often explained through dasha, meaning ten, because bathing in the Ganga on this day is traditionally said to dissolve ten kinds of wrongdoing in thought, word and deed. Ganga Dussehra usually falls the day before Nirjala Ekadashi, and you can read about that fast in our Nirjala Ekadashi guide.

FAQ

When is Ganga Dussehra in 2027?

Ganga Dussehra falls on Sunday, 13 June 2027. The Dashami tithi begins at 1:13 AM on 13 June and ends at 12:41 AM on 14 June in Dubai.

What is the Ganga Dussehra timing in Dubai?

Dashami tithi runs from 1:13 AM on 13 June to 12:41 AM on 14 June 2027, and Hasta Nakshatra ends at 3:29 PM on 13 June. The same timings serve Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ajman, which differ from Dubai by only a few minutes.

Why do UAE timings differ from Indian listings?

Tithi is calculated against local sunrise, and the UAE is 90 minutes behind Indian Standard Time. A time taken from an Indian source can therefore be out by around an hour and a half for a family in Dubai.

What is the story of Ganga Avataran?

King Bhagirath performed severe penance so that the Ganga would descend and free the souls of his ancestors. Her force was too great for the earth, so Lord Shiva held her in his locks and released her gently, and she became the life-giving river we know.

Can we celebrate Ganga Dussehra at home without the river?

Yes. Many devotees keep Gangajal at home and use it in prayer, sprinkling a little around the pooja space or adding it to bathing water. The sincerity of the prayer matters more than the place.

What should I offer or donate on Ganga Dussehra?

Flowers, incense, a lamp and camphor are the usual offerings, and many families offer ten of each item. Charity of food, water or clothing is considered especially meaningful on this day.

Is Ganga Dussehra the same as Ganga Jayanti?

No. Ganga Dussehra remembers her descent to earth, while Ganga Jayanti remembers her birth, and the two fall on different dates in the lunar calendar.

Divine Sansar, owned by Dr. Kavita Tiwari, always gives festival dates and muhurat in UAE local time so that families in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ajman can plan with confidence.
