How Much Copper Water Is Safe? Daily Limits, Side Effects and Who Should Avoid It

For most healthy adults, drinking water stored overnight in a copper vessel every day is safe. Measured copper in water left in a copper pot for 16 hours came to 0.177 mg per litre, roughly one eleventh of the World Health Organization's guideline value of 2 mg per litre for drinking water. The real risks are not about quantity at all, and they are covered below.

This page sets out the actual numbers, the two mistakes that genuinely do raise copper to unsafe levels, and the specific people who should not use a copper vessel at all. We would rather you drank nothing from a copper bottle than drank from one without knowing this.

A note on which of those numbers actually binds. You will often see the WHO figure of 10 mg per day quoted on its own, because it is the most generous. EFSA's 2023 review set an acceptable daily intake of 0.07 mg per kg of body weight, which works out at roughly 4.2 mg per day for a 60 kg adult. That is less than half the WHO upper level, and it is lower than the 5 mg per day retention figure as well. We are quoting the strictest of these, not the friendliest.

Put those together and the picture is still clear. A litre of overnight copper water carries about 0.177 mg of copper. That is roughly a fifth of the 0.9 mg an adult is meant to get daily from food anyway, and about four per cent of EFSA's acceptable daily intake.

This cuts both ways, and we think that is worth saying out loud. The same small number that makes copper water safe also makes the dramatic claims about it implausible. A tenth of a milligram is not reorganising your metabolism. If a page tells you copper water detoxifies your organs and also tells you it is perfectly safe, one of those two statements is doing a lot of quiet work.

The two rules that matter far more than quantity

Almost every real case of copper reaching unsafe levels in a drinking vessel comes down to one of two mistakes. Neither is about drinking too much.

Rule one: plain water only, never anything acidic

This is the rule people break most often, usually with lemon water, and the numbers on it are startling.

A 2022 study in the Journal of Environmental Health measured copper leaching from a copper mug into an acidic drink at pH 2.7. Copper entered the liquid at 0.048 parts per million per minute, reaching 1.3 mg per litre within 27 minutes. Left undisturbed for 20 days, the same solution turned turquoise and copper was measured as high as 1,000 mg per litre.

Set that against plain water. Overnight storage for 16 hours gives 0.177 mg/L. An acidic drink gives more than seven times that concentration in a fraction of the time.

This is not a fringe concern. The US FDA Food Code, section 4-101.14, states plainly that copper and copper alloys may not be used in contact with food that has a pH below 6, naming vinegar, fruit juice and wine as examples. To be precise about what that rule is: it governs equipment in retail food establishments, not consumer products, and it has some exceptions. It does not regulate your water bottle. But it is a regulator looking at copper and acid and drawing a hard line, and lemon water sits well under that threshold.

So: no lemon water, no lime, no juice, no vinegar, no tamarind water, no buttermilk, no wine, no soda. Plain drinking water, and nothing else.

Rule two: nothing hot

Heat accelerates the same reaction. Dissolved oxygen does too, which is why the study above found the leaching rate rose 2.6 times when oxygen was reintroduced to the solution.

No tea, no coffee, no hot water, no warm honey drinks. Cool or room temperature water only.

What too much copper actually does

Copper is an essential nutrient, not a poison at ordinary levels. Your body needs it and gets it from nuts, seeds, shellfish, organ meats and whole grains every day.

At high intakes the first effects are gastrointestinal and they arrive quickly rather than building silently. Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and a metallic taste are the classic signs. The WHO guideline of 2 mg/L exists specifically to protect against these acute effects with a margin of safety built in.

There are also two built-in warnings most people do not know about. Above 2.5 mg/L, copper gives water an undesirable bitter taste. And at a lower threshold, above 1 mg/L, copper stains laundry and sanitary ware. If water from your bottle tastes wrong, or you notice blue-green marks in a basin, that is information. Do not drink it, and check what you put in there.

Long-term copper accumulation causing liver damage is real but it is overwhelmingly a story about genetic conditions and contaminated water supplies, not about drinking vessels used correctly.

Who should not use a copper vessel

This section is short and it is the most important part of the page.

Anyone with Wilson's disease. This is a rare inherited disorder, affecting roughly 1 in 30,000 people, in which the body cannot clear copper properly and it accumulates in the liver and brain. It is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern and symptoms usually appear between ages 6 and 45, most often in the teenage years. Anyone diagnosed with it should avoid copper vessels entirely.

Anyone with another copper metabolism disorder, or liver disease affecting copper clearance. The WHO itself notes remaining uncertainty about long-term copper effects in sensitive groups, including carriers of the Wilson disease gene.

Anyone already taking a mineral supplement containing copper. Not because the bottle adds much, but because you should know your total intake from all sources before adding another.

Anyone with a pitta-type digestive complaint, in the Ayurvedic framing. Because copper is described as hot in potency, the classical texts treat copper water as unsuitable for conditions like gastritis and hyperacidity. Does copper water harm the liver?

For a healthy adult using a copper vessel correctly, there is no evidence that it does. The liver is the organ that regulates copper in the body, and at 0.177 mg per litre it is handling an amount well inside its normal working range.

The concern is legitimate in two situations. The first is Wilson's disease and related disorders, where the clearance mechanism itself is impaired, and there copper genuinely does accumulate in the liver. The second is sustained high intake from a contaminated supply or from misuse, such as storing acidic drinks in copper for long periods.

What copper water does not do is support, cleanse or detoxify the liver. Your liver performs detoxification. No water, in any vessel, performs it for the liver, and the word has no clinical meaning in this context.

A note for households in the UAE

One thing worth knowing if you live in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah or Ajman: your tap water may already carry some copper before it ever reaches your bottle, because copper is a common plumbing material. The WHO notes that copper concentrations in standing or partially flushed water are frequently above 1 mg per litre.

The practical response is the ordinary one. If a tap has not been used for several hours, let it run briefly before filling anything. That is good practice regardless of what you are filling.

Two more UAE-specific points. Warm apartments accelerate any chemical reaction, which is another reason not to leave water sitting in copper for days rather than overnight. And if you use a filtered or RO supply, that water is slightly more aggressive toward metals than hard tap water, so keep to the overnight window rather than extending it.

How to stay comfortably inside the safe zone

  1. Plain, room-temperature drinking water. Nothing acidic, nothing hot, ever.
  2. Rest it 6 to 8 hours, or overnight. Longer is not better. The published figures come from 16 and 24 hour windows, and beyond that you are simply drinking stale water.
  3. Empty and rinse the vessel daily rather than topping it up.
  4. Clean the interior when it looks dull, and dry it properly.
  5. If the water tastes bitter, do not drink it. Find out why.
  6. If you have a liver condition, a copper metabolism disorder, or you are pregnant, speak to your doctor first.

Used this way, a copper vessel sits firmly in the routine category rather than the risky one. That is the honest summary, and it is the reason we sell one.
