Meera Bai Jayanti 2026 in the UAE: Date, Her Story and How to Keep the Day

Meera Bai Jayanti 2026 in the UAE - Krishna bhajan and devotion - Divine Sansar

Meera Bai Jayanti 2026 falls on Monday, 26 October 2026. It is kept on the Ashwina Shukla Purnima, which in Dubai runs from 10:25 AM on 25 October to 08:11 AM on 26 October.

She was a Rajput princess who walked away from a palace to sing to Krishna, and five hundred years later people who have never read a word about her still know her songs. There is no formal puja attached to the day. The observance is that you sing.

All timings on this page are calculated for Dubai in Gulf Standard Time.

Why the date is 26 October and not 25

This confuses people every year, so it is worth settling first.

Sharad Purnima was on Sunday 25 October. Meera Bai Jayanti is on Monday 26 October. Both are the same Purnima tithi.

The difference is which moment each one is measured from. Sharad Purnima is a night observance tied to moonrise, so it is kept on the evening the full moon appears, the 25th. A jayanti follows the sunrise rule: it is kept on the day the tithi is present at sunrise. The Purnima only begins at 10:25 AM on the 25th, so it is not there at that morning's sunrise. On the 26th it is still running until 08:11 AM, so it is.

Valmiki Jayanti falls on the same 26 October for exactly the same reason.

Who Meera Bai Was

She was born around 1498 at Kudki, a village in the Merta region of Marwar in Rajasthan, into the Rathore Rajput line. Her grandfather was Rao Dudaji of Merta. The dates are traditional rather than documented, and historians differ by a decade either way.

The story most often told about her childhood is that she was given a small Krishna murti as a child and took it entirely literally. Asked who she would marry, she pointed at it.

Around 1516 she was married to Bhojraj, the crown prince of Mewar and son of Rana Sanga. He died within a few years, and she was widowed young, in a court where a widowed princess was expected to disappear quietly.

She did not. She kept singing, kept the company of sadhus, and kept refusing to treat her marriage to Krishna as a figure of speech. The family read that as a scandal.

The Stories Everyone Knows

Two survive above the rest, and both are about the household trying to be rid of her.

A cup of poison was sent to her, presented as charanamrit. She drank it in front of the murti and was unharmed. A basket was sent with a snake inside; she opened it and found a garland, or in some tellings a Krishna image.

Whether either happened is not the point of them. They are stories about a woman who could not be threatened out of what she loved, told in a form that made that legible to the people repeating them.

Eventually she left Mewar. She went to Vrindavan, where the Braj tradition around Krishna was strongest, and then to Dwarka. The traditional account has her disappearing into the Krishna image at Dwarka around 1547, which is how a life like hers is expected to end in the telling.

The Songs

Her padas are in Braj and Rajasthani, plain enough that a child can follow them and direct enough that they still land. Her refrain names her position exactly: "Mere to Giridhar Gopal, dusro na koi." Giridhar Gopal is mine, and no one else.

Giridhar, the one who lifted the mountain, is how she almost always addresses him. Not Krishna the king at Dwarka, but the cowherd who held Govardhan up over the village.

Worth knowing: hundreds of bhajans are attributed to her, and scholars are confident that many were composed later by others and given her name. That is not a scandal either. It is what happens when a voice becomes something people want to sing in.

What makes her unusual in the bhakti tradition is that she is one of very few women whose songs entered the standard repertoire and stayed there, alongside Surdas, Tulsidas and Kabir.

How the Day Is Kept

There is no prescribed vidhi. A jayanti for a saint is not a vrat, and Meera in particular would be an odd person to build a rulebook around. What families actually do:

  1. Bathe early and clean the mandir. Dress the Krishna murti or frame in yellow, and offer tulsi.
  2. Light a ghee lamp and offer flowers, preferably yellow or white.
  3. Sing. This is the whole observance. Play her bhajans if you do not sing, and follow along.
  4. Chant Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya, or the Hare Krishna mahamantra, on a tulsi mala.
  5. Offer makhan mishri, butter and rock sugar, the offering Krishna is given as a child. Panjiri, kheer or any milk sweet works.
  6. Read a little. A few of her padas, or a chapter of the Gita.
  7. Share the prasad.

Many keep a light fast until the evening. It is optional and not part of the tradition in any formal sense.

If japa is new to you, our guide on how to use a japa mala covers the method, and eleven ways to hold Krishna's attention is a gentler read for the day itself.

Meera Bai Jayanti in the UAE

This is a small, quiet day here, and that suits it. There are no public Meera Bai events in the Emirates that run on a fixed calendar, so it is kept at home or in a satsang group.

26 October 2026 is a Monday, a working day. The Purnima ends at 08:11 AM, so a short morning offering before work sits inside the tithi. Most families do the singing in the evening, which is fine: the tithi governs the formal offering, not the bhajan.

Rajasthani and Marwari families are the ones who feel it most. There is a large Marwari business community across Dubai and Sharjah, and Meera is Rajasthan's own saint. In many of those households her bhajans are already part of the weekly satsang rather than a once-a-year thing.

Tulsi is the sourcing item. No Krishna offering is really complete without tulsi leaves, and fresh tulsi is not reliably stocked in UAE supermarkets. A live plant on the balcony solves it permanently and is what most families here end up doing.

Timing note. Every timing here is Gulf Standard Time. Indian panchang apps run an hour and a half ahead, and because the Purnima ends early on the morning of the 26th, that gap is enough to move which side of sunrise the tithi falls on. This is one of the days where an Indian app can genuinely give you the wrong date for the UAE.

The night before is Sharad Purnima with the kheer in the moonlight, and Kojagara Puja, so 25 and 26 October run together as one long observance for many households.

Frequently asked questions

When is Meera Bai Jayanti 2026?

Monday, 26 October 2026, on the Ashwina Shukla Purnima. In Dubai that Purnima runs from 10:25 AM on 25 October to 08:11 AM on 26 October.

Why is it a day after Sharad Purnima?

Both are the same Purnima tithi, measured from different moments. Sharad Purnima is a night observance tied to moonrise on the 25th. A jayanti follows the sunrise rule, and the Purnima is only present at sunrise on the 26th. Valmiki Jayanti falls on the 26th for the same reason.

Who was Meera Bai?

A Rathore Rajput princess born around 1498 near Merta in Rajasthan, married into the royal house of Mewar and widowed young. She refused to give up her devotion to Krishna as Giridhar Gopal, left the court, and became one of the best known voices of the bhakti movement.

Is there a fast or a formal puja?

No. It is a saint's jayanti, not a vrat. Some keep a light fast until evening out of respect. The observance that matters is singing her bhajans and offering tulsi to Krishna.

What is offered on Meera Bai Jayanti?

Tulsi leaves, yellow or white flowers, a ghee lamp, and makhan mishri or any milk sweet. Krishna is dressed in yellow. Nothing elaborate is expected.

Did Meera Bai really write all the bhajans attributed to her?

Almost certainly not. Hundreds carry her name and scholars agree many were composed later by others and attributed to her. The core body is hers; the rest is what happens when a voice becomes one people want to sing in.

Which Krishna did she worship?

Giridhar Gopal, the cowherd who lifted Mount Govardhan. Not the king at Dwarka but the one from Braj, which is why she went to Vrindavan.

Can I keep the day if I am not from Rajasthan?

Yes. Her songs travelled far beyond Rajasthan centuries ago and are sung across North and West India and well beyond. There is no regional claim on her.

Bringing it home

Light a lamp on Monday 26 October, offer tulsi, and play one of her bhajans through to the end without doing anything else. That is closer to the point of her than any vidhi would be.

The rest of the season is on our Hindu Festival and Tithi Calendar for the UAE, and Karwa Chauth follows on 29 October.
