The Shwet Kamal is an ivory and gold bandhanwar for the main door, 100 cm wide, with hand beaded white pearl lotuses at both ends and a gold kundan star at the centre. It is the quietest of our beaded torans - all ivory, pearl and soft gold, with no bright colour - so it sits well on a light stone villa entrance or a white apartment door.

Shwet kamal means white lotus, the flower Lakshmi stands on, which is why a lotus over the threshold is the traditional welcome at Diwali and Grah Pravesh.

What it is made of

The base is a stiff woven gold lace with mirror work and a scalloped pearl lower edge. On it sit two large corner medallions - a coiled gold zari roundel ringed with pearls, with a white beaded lotus over copper and gold sequin petals.

Between them run white beaded leaves on gold zari, mirror-and-pearl roundels and beaded white roses. The centre is a gold zari medallion with a silver kundan star, set over a cream and gold beaded lotus.

Is it white or cream?

Ivory pearl and white beadwork on a soft gold lace band. In daylight it reads warm white and gold, never stark white.

How do I hang it?

From the two band ends, on small hooks, nails or adhesive hooks either side of the door frame. A third hook behind the centre keeps a long band dead straight. The band is stiff, so it holds a clean line without a rail.

Will the beadwork come loose?

Every motif is hand stitched onto the band rather than glued, which is what usually fails on cheaper pieces in UAE heat. Store it flat between festivals and it lasts for years.

Is it only for Diwali?

No. A bandhanwar on the main door is a year round welcome, and this one suits Dhanteras and Diwali, Navratri, Grah Pravesh, Satyanarayan Katha and a wedding house equally.

How do I clean it?

Dust gently with a soft dry brush. Do not wet the mirrors, beads or the gold lace, and do not fold the band across the medallions.

Can I use it indoors?

Yes. It looks just as good over a mandir arch, a pooja room door or a living room doorway.
