This is a set of twelve plain clay diyas, each about 6 cm across, packed in a window gift box with a bundle of cotton wicks. They are natural, unpainted terracotta with a pressed wheel and petal pattern, a patterned rim and a pointed spout for the wick. Add ghee or oil and the set is ready to light.
At 6 cm they are a little roomier than our small diyas, so they hold more oil and burn longer through a Diwali evening.

Everything but the oil
Plain cotton wicks still need ghee or oil to burn, so keep a small bottle handy. With diyas and wicks in one box, you only need to add oil to light up your doorway, balcony or pooja room on Diwali, Karthigai Deepam or any evening aarti.
How to prepare and light them
- Soak the diyas in clean water for an hour or two and let them dry fully before first use. Unglazed clay is porous, and soaking helps it hold oil instead of drinking it up.
- Add ghee or oil and lay a cotton wick along the spout, with the tip resting just past the edge.
- Place them on a steady, heat-safe surface and never leave a lit diya unattended.

How big is each diya?
Each diya is about 6 cm across. Handmade clay varies a little from piece to piece.
Are wicks included?
Yes. A bundle of plain cotton wicks comes packed inside one of the diyas in the box.
Is the set ready to light?
Almost. Cotton wicks need ghee or oil to burn, so just add your own oil.
Do I need to soak the diyas first?
It helps. Soak them for an hour or two and let them dry completely. The clay then absorbs less oil and burns more evenly.
Are these painted?
No. They are natural terracotta with a pressed pattern, the traditional mitti diya.
Can I reuse them?
Yes. Wipe out the old oil once they cool and they are ready for the next pooja.
