The Pitambar Nazar is a yellow and gold bandhanwar for the main door, 100 cm wide, with a large yellow beaded lotus at the centre, evil eye lotuses at both ends and little yellow butterflies along the band. It is the brightest and most cheerful of our beaded torans.

Pitambar is the yellow silk Krishna and Vishnu wear, and yellow is the colour of auspicious beginnings, which makes this a natural pick for a Grah Pravesh, a haldi or a Diwali door.

What it is made of

The base is a stiff woven gold lace with mirror work and a scalloped pearl edge. The centre is a pearl medallion with a silver kundan star, set beside a large yellow beaded lotus.

Each end carries a beaded evil eye in blue and white inside a yellow lotus, with a silver sequin leaf. Between them are white beaded leaves, pearl-and-mirror roundels, yellow butterflies and lotus petals filled with cut mirror.

Key details

  • Yellow lotus centre: a pearl medallion with a kundan star beside a beaded yellow lotus.
  • Evil eye corners: blue and white beaded nazar set in yellow lotus petals.
  • Mirror petals and butterflies: cut mirror set into beaded petals, with small yellow beaded butterflies.
  • Seven tassels: cream bead and gold bugle-bead tassels with yellow beaded balls at each corner, plus a single centre drop.
  • Size: about 100 cm wide with a drop of about 28 cm to the longest tassel.
  • Packed: ships in a box, so the beadwork and tassels arrive flat and undamaged.

On a UAE front door

Most front doors in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ajman apartments and villas are about 1 metre wide, and this bandhanwar is made to that size. It hangs across the top of the door and sits neatly within the door frame, with the corner drops just inside the two top corners.

The band is stiff and the work is stitched rather than glued, which is what holds up through a UAE summer behind a sunlit door. Delivery is free across the UAE on orders from AED 30, so this piece ships free.

Questions people ask

Why yellow on the door?

Yellow is the colour of haldi, pitambar and new beginnings, so it is a favourite for Grah Pravesh and wedding houses as well as Diwali.

Are the mirrors real?

Yes, cut mirror pieces set into the beaded petals. Handle the band by its ends.

How do I hang it?

From the two band ends, on small hooks, nails or adhesive hooks either side of the door frame. A third hook behind the centre keeps a long band dead straight. The band is stiff, so it holds a clean line without a rail.

Will the beadwork come loose?

Every motif is hand stitched onto the band rather than glued, which is what usually fails on cheaper pieces in UAE heat. Store it flat between festivals and it lasts for years.

Is it only for Diwali?

No. A bandhanwar on the main door is a year round welcome, and this one suits Dhanteras and Diwali, Navratri, Grah Pravesh, Satyanarayan Katha and a wedding house equally.

How do I clean it?

Dust gently with a soft dry brush. Do not wet the mirrors, beads or the gold lace, and do not fold the band across the medallions.

Can I use it indoors?

Yes. It looks just as good over a mandir arch, a pooja room door or a living room doorway.
