The Neel Nazar is a blue and gold evil eye bandhanwar for the main door, 100 cm wide, with two hand beaded nazar roundels, aqua leaf corners and a blue peacock fan at the centre. If you want a toran that is mostly about keeping buri nazar off the house, this is the one.

The evil eye over the entrance is a tradition shared across India, the Gulf and the Mediterranean, which is part of why it feels so at home on a UAE door.

What it is made of

The base is a stiff gold lace band with a row of cut mirror teardrops along its lower edge, so it throws light every time the door opens. Two large beaded evil eyes in deep blue, white and black sit on it, each flanked by white and gold beaded lotus flowers with small kundan clusters.

The ends carry aqua beaded leaves with a white beaded lotus and a turquoise stone flower. At the centre a peacock fan of blue and aqua stones rises above a kundan paisley and a cream pearl lotus.

Key details

  • Two nazar roundels: hand beaded evil eyes in blue, white and black.
  • Peacock fan centre: blue and aqua stones over a kundan paisley and pearl lotus.
  • Mirror teardrop edge: cut mirror pieces along the full length of the band.
  • Blue tassels: sky blue bugle-bead tassels with pearl drops at both corners and the centre, plus two single drops along the band.
  • Size: about 100 cm wide with a drop of about 28 cm to the longest tassel.
  • Packed: ships in a box, so the beadwork and tassels arrive flat and undamaged.

On a UAE front door

Most front doors in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ajman apartments and villas are about 1 metre wide, and this bandhanwar is made to that size. It hangs across the top of the door and sits neatly within the door frame, with the corner drops just inside the two top corners.

The band is stiff and the work is stitched rather than glued, which is what holds up through a UAE summer behind a sunlit door. Delivery is free across the UAE on orders from AED 30, so this piece ships free.

Questions people ask

Are the mirrors real?

Yes, cut mirror pieces set along the band edge. Handle the band by its ends and do not fold it across the mirror row.

Is the evil eye a Hindu symbol?

The nazar is used across many cultures, including in Indian homes as nazar battu or drishti. It sits comfortably alongside the lotus and peacock, both deeply rooted Hindu motifs.

How do I hang it?

From the two band ends, on small hooks, nails or adhesive hooks either side of the door frame. A third hook behind the centre keeps a long band dead straight. The band is stiff, so it holds a clean line without a rail.

Will the beadwork come loose?

Every motif is hand stitched onto the band rather than glued, which is what usually fails on cheaper pieces in UAE heat. Store it flat between festivals and it lasts for years.

Is it only for Diwali?

No. A bandhanwar on the main door is a year round welcome, and this one suits Dhanteras and Diwali, Navratri, Grah Pravesh, Satyanarayan Katha and a wedding house equally.

How do I clean it?

Dust gently with a soft dry brush. Do not wet the mirrors, beads or the gold lace, and do not fold the band across the medallions.

Can I use it indoors?

Yes. It looks just as good over a mandir arch, a pooja room door or a living room doorway.
