Why tulsi

Tulsi is holy basil, and the beads are turned from the mature woody stem of the plant rather than the leaf. In bhakti tradition tulsi is the plant most closely associated with Vishnu and Krishna, which is why a Vaishnava counts on tulsi much as a Shaiva counts on rudraksha. The wood is the tradition, not a preference.

At 10 mm the beads are large enough to find one at a time without looking down. The extra bead is the guru or sumeru bead: it marks the start and the end of a round and is never crossed over.

What a gomukhi is for

The name comes from the Sanskrit go-mukha, cow's face, for the tapered shape of the pouch. Your hand goes in through the side opening and the beads turn out of sight while you chant.

Three reasons are traditionally given for using one. The mala stays clean, it never touches the floor, and the count stays between you and the deity. Most of the market sells the mala on its own, so the bag usually arrives without anyone explaining what it is.

How to use the set

1. A drop of sandal attar on the wrist or on your aasan cloth before you sit.
2. Place the mala inside the gomukhi with the guru bead near the opening.
3. Slide your right hand in, rest the thumb outside and move one bead per repetition with the middle finger.
4. One full round is 108. Turn the mala at the guru bead rather than crossing it to begin the next round.
5. Keep the mor pankh in the mandir beside your Krishna murti or photo.

Care

• Keep the attar off the beads. Tulsi is porous and takes up oil and perfume permanently. The attar goes on the wrist or the cloth, never on the mala.
• Store the mala inside the gomukhi bag between sittings.
• Hand wash the bag in cold water and dry it in shade. Do not wring it, as the artwork is printed on the surface.
• Keep the feather dry and out of direct sunlight, and stand it upright so it holds its shape.
• Wipe the mala with a soft dry cloth. Tulsi is porous, so do not soak it.

Why is the mala tulsi rather than rudraksha?

Tulsi is the wood associated with Vishnu and Krishna in bhakti tradition, so it is the mala used for Krishna and Radha japa. Rudraksha belongs to Shiva sadhana. Both are in our Jaap Mala collection if you keep separate malas for separate practices.

Do I have to use the gomukhi bag?

No. It is a traditional aid, not a rule. It keeps the mala clean, off the floor and out of sight while you chant, and many people simply like having somewhere to keep the mala between sittings.

Can I put the attar on the mala?

Please do not. Tulsi wood is porous and absorbs oil and perfume permanently. Apply the attar to your wrist or to the pooja cloth instead.

What size is the mor pankh?

The set includes the small size. Each feather is natural, so length, shape and markings vary slightly from one to the next.

Is the mala suitable for men and women?

Yes. A tulsi japa mala is worn and used by men and women alike, and it can be worn at the neck or wrapped at the wrist when it is not in use for japa.
