Why the lotus?

Kamal, the lotus, is Maa Lakshmi's own flower. She is called Kamala and Padma, she is shown seated on an open lotus and holding lotuses in her hands, and the flower stands for purity that rises clean out of muddy water.

A lotus diya brings that symbol and the light together in one small lamp. How to light your Kamal Diya

1. Wipe the diya clean and set it on a steady plate or thali.
2. Fill the bowl about two-thirds with ghee or til oil. The bowl is small, so pour slowly.
3. Place one round cotton wick with its tip resting at the pointed end of the bowl. Our Rui Batti cotton wicks in the Round style fit well.
4. Light the wick and offer your prayer. A single filling is sized for aarti and an evening puja, so top it up if you want it to burn longer.
5. Keep the diya in view and never leave a flame unattended.

Caring for brass

Let the diya cool fully, pour out any leftover oil and wash in warm soapy water with a soft brush in the petal lines. The antique finish is part of the design, so avoid harsh scrubbing. Brass naturally deepens in colour with use, and a gentle rub with lemon and salt, rinsed and dried, freshens it before a festival.
