This is a miniature brass soop, the traditional winnowing fan, with the Shree Yantra engraved on its floor. At 5.5 x 5.5 cm it sits in the palm, in a locker, a cash drawer or on the smallest mandir shelf, and it comes in its own velvet pouch. Families keep it as a small, lasting symbol of Maa Lakshmi's abundance, and it is a favourite for Dhanteras, Diwali and return gifts across the UAE.
Why a soop, and why the Shree Yantra
A soop separates grain from husk. It keeps what nourishes and lets the chaff blow away, which is why it has long stood for a home that holds on to its wealth. In many households the soop is part of Lakshmi Puja, and in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar a soop is beaten through the house at dawn after Diwali to send Daridra, poverty, out of the door.
The Shree Yantra is the most revered of all yantras: nine interlocking triangles inside a lotus and a square bhupura with four gates. Engraved on a soop, it pairs the idea of keeping abundance with the geometry most closely linked to Maa Lakshmi. In South India the same fan is the muram, which is where the name murum comes from.

Care
Brass darkens slowly with air and touch, which many families see as part of its character. To bring back the shine, rub gently with a paste of lemon juice and salt or tamarind, rinse, and dry completely with a soft cloth. Keep it in its velvet pouch between pujas.

Frequently asked questions
What is a murum or soop?
It is a winnowing fan, used for centuries to separate grain from husk. Soop and supa are the Hindi names, and muram is the Tamil and Malayalam name. This is a small brass version made for puja, gifting and keeping in the locker, not for winnowing.
How big is it?
5.5 cm wide and 5.5 cm deep, about the size of a matchbox. It fits in the palm, on a locker shelf or in a wallet drawer.
Where should I keep it after the puja?
Most families keep it with its offerings in the velvet pouch inside the locker, tijori or cash box, and bring it out again for the next Dhanteras or Diwali. A pooja room shelf or a shop cash counter works well too.
What should I place in it?
Traditional choices are cowrie shells, gomti chakra, kamalgatta seeds, a whole supari, a little rice with haldi, or a coin. Keep it simple and offer whatever your family tradition uses.
Does each piece come in a pouch?
Yes. Every soop comes in its own velvet pouch, including each of the ten in the Set of 10, so they are ready to gift.
Is it a good return gift?
Yes. It is small, meaningful and useful all year, which is why the Set of 10 is made for Diwali, Lakshmi Puja, housewarming and kitty party return gifts in the UAE.
Will the brass tarnish?
Brass darkens naturally over time. A little lemon and salt, a rinse and a dry cloth bring the shine back in a minute.
