Bhoj patra is the sacred bark of the Himalayan birch tree, used in Hindu worship as the surface on which yantras and mantras are written by hand. This is a single natural sheet, ready for your pooja, delivered across the UAE.

Known in Sanskrit as bhurja patra, it was one of the earliest writing materials of the Indian subcontinent, and many old manuscripts survive on it. In ritual, it is still preferred over paper because it is a natural, sattvic material that holds ink well.

How bhoj patra is used in pooja

The yantra or mantra is drawn on the sheet, traditionally with ashtagandh, kesar or red chandan, and a pen cut from a pomegranate (anar) twig. It is done on an auspicious day, after a bath, facing east, with the sankalp taken first.

Once written, the sheet is kept in the mandir, folded into a kavach or tabeez, or placed in the cash box or locker, with intention.

When families use it

  • Navratri, for Devi yantras written during the nine nights
  • Diwali and Dhanteras, for Lakshmi and Kuber yantras
  • Grah Pravesh and new business beginnings
  • Shani, Hanuman and Navagraha pooja, as your pandit ji advises

What you get

  • 1 natural bhoj patra (Himalayan birch bark) sheet, approx. 12.7 x 12.7 cm (5 x 5 inch)
  • Natural material, so each sheet varies slightly in colour, texture and shape
  • Packed in its own plastic sleeve, and your order ships flat between cardboard sheets so the bark reaches you unbroken

Care

Keep it dry and flat in its sleeve until you are ready to write, away from moisture. Handle it gently, as natural bark can split along its grain if bent sharply.

Bhoj patra in the UAE

Finding genuine bhoj patra in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah or Ajman usually means waiting for an import from India. We keep it in stock locally, so you can have it before your pooja rather than after it.

At AED 15, it sits neatly alongside the rest of your pooja samagri or a copper yantra. Delivery is free across the UAE on orders above AED 30.

Frequently asked questions

What is bhoj patra?

It is the thin outer bark of the Himalayan birch tree. In Hindu tradition it is the preferred surface for writing yantras and mantras by hand.

What do I write on bhoj patra with?

Ashtagandh is the most common, with kesar or red chandan as alternatives. A pomegranate twig pen is traditional, though your pandit ji may suggest another.

How many sheets do I need?

One 12.7 cm square sheet comfortably holds one yantra. If you are writing a yantra for each day of Navratri or for several family members, order one sheet for each.

Can I write any yantra on it?

Yes, bhoj patra is used for most hand-written yantras. The exact yantra, day and method are best confirmed with your family pandit.

Where do I keep it after writing?

In the mandir, inside a kavach or tabeez, or in the cash box or locker, depending on the purpose of the yantra.

Is every sheet the same?

No. It is natural bark, so colour, texture and edges vary slightly from sheet to sheet.

How is bhoj patra packed?

Bark is delicate, so each sheet goes into a plastic sleeve and the whole order is shipped between cardboard sheets. It arrives flat and ready to use.
