What ashtadhatu actually means

Ashtadhatu is the eight metal alloy named in the Shilpa Shastra tradition: gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, tin, iron and mercury. It is the alloy Indian and Jain temples have used for casting murtis and yantras for centuries, chosen because the combination is considered more complete than any single metal.

It is not plated and it is not sheet metal. This plate is cast, which is why the relief stands proud of the surface and why it has weight in the hand.

What is cast on this plate

The Sri Chakra sits at the centre, the nine interlocking triangles that form the classic figure, ringed by lotus petals carrying seed syllables and enclosed by the bhupura, the square boundary with four gateways.

The title श्रीयंत्र is cast across the top and लक्ष्मी दाता, giver of Lakshmi, along the bottom. Both side bands carry the Mahalakshmi mantra: ॐ श्रीं ह्रीं श्रीं कमले कमलालये प्रसीद प्रसीद श्रीं ह्रीं श्रीं ॐ महालक्ष्म्यै नमः.

Hand cast, not stamped

Each plate is cast by hand in India, then hand finished. The ground is stippled by hand so the raised lines and lettering catch the light, and the rim is filed and polished after the pour.

Because it is hand cast, no two pieces are identical. Small differences in the texture of the ground, the tone of the metal and the depth of the relief are the mark of the process, not a flaw in it.

Caring for the metal

Cast metal darkens naturally with time and with contact with oil, kumkum and incense smoke. Many households prefer that patina and leave it alone.

If you would rather keep it bright, wipe it with a dry soft cloth after pooja and use a little tamarind or lemon with salt occasionally, then dry it fully. Avoid harsh scouring, which flattens the raised detail.
