Fresh bilva is a seasonal leaf and we cut to order in small batches. For families following the Amanta calendar, Shravana masam runs later than the North Indian Shravan, so Somvar and Pradosham observances continue well past the northern window.

How it is used

Rinse each leaf in clean water and pat it dry. The leaf is offered smooth side down onto the Shivling, with the stem pointing toward you, usually after the abhishek and with the mantra of the family tradition. Many households offer eleven leaves on Somvar and Pradosham, and a larger count through Shravana masam and on Maha Shivratri.

In Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada households the same leaf appears as vilvam, maredu dalam, koovalam and bilipatre, and it is central to Pradosham and Karthigai worship.

Keeping them fresh

Wrap the leaves in a slightly damp cloth inside a perforated bag and keep them in the fridge. Handled this way they hold for two to four days. Do not freeze, as freezing darkens the leaf and ruins the texture.

An offering that is always on the altar

Fresh bilva is seasonal by nature. Some families keep our Silver Plated Belpatra, Set of 5 on the altar alongside it, so there is always a bilva offering ready for a Somvar or a Pradosham that falls between fresh batches. Fresh when it is available, silver always at hand.

Questions people ask

How many belpatra should I offer?

Custom varies. Many families offer eleven on Somvar and Pradosham, some offer a single leaf daily, and larger counts of twenty one or one hundred and eight are kept for Maha Shivratri and Rudrabhishek. A pack of 10 covers daily offering or a home abhishek.

Why must the leaf have three leaflets?

The three leaflets are understood as the three eyes of Shiva and the three gunas. A leaf that has lost a leaflet is traditionally not offered, which is why we sort every pack by hand.

Can a belpatra be washed and offered again?

Yes. In many households a bilva leaf already offered may be rinsed and offered again, since fresh bilva is not always available. Family custom decides this.

Which way up does the leaf go on the Shivling?

Smooth side down against the Shivling, stem toward the person offering. Traditions differ on the stem direction, and both are followed.

Is fresh belpatra available all year?

Not reliably. It is seasonal and our batches are small. Message us on WhatsApp and we will tell you when the next batch lands.

How is this different from the silver belpatra?

The fresh leaf is the traditional offering and is used once. The silver plated set is a lasting offering kept permanently on the altar, for days when fresh leaves are not to hand. Many families keep both.

Do you deliver belpatra outside Dubai?

Yes, across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ajman. Dubai is fastest. For the other emirates, order a day earlier.
