- Single - one diya, for topping up an order or replacing a broken piece.
- Set of 6 - the pooja thali, the mandir shelf, a balcony railing.
- Set of 12 - one floor of a flat: entrance, windows and the pooja room.
- Set of 25 + Wicks - the whole home on Diwali night, with 100 long cotton wicks in the box.
About the diya
Each diya is moulded from natural clay and finished by hand in deep terracotta red with gold detailing around the rim. Because the painting is done by hand, no two are identical, and small variations in the gold work are a sign that a person made it rather than a machine.
At 6 cm across it holds a comfortable pool of oil or ghee and a single wick. It is the everyday size: small enough to line a staircase or a window ledge, steady enough not to tip on an uneven surface. Wash it gently, dry it, and it will serve you for many years, which is what a mitti diya has always been.
What comes in the Set of 25 + Wicks
Twenty five hand-painted 6 cm clay diyas, plus one sealed pouch of 100 Lambi Batti, our long kesar-tipped cotton wicks. A hundred wicks covers roughly four full lightings of all twenty five diyas, which carries most homes through Dhanteras to Bhai Dooj.
The wicks are pure cotton, so you will need oil or ghee alongside them. Our Diwali Specials collection carries Chameli Ka Tel if you would like to add it to the same order.
Lighting a new clay diya
Soak new diyas in plain water for two to three hours, then dry them completely before the first use. Unsoaked clay is thirsty and will drink the oil straight out of the bowl, so the flame gives up early. This one step is the difference between a diya that burns all evening and one that goes out during aarti.
Fill with mustard oil, sesame oil or ghee, lay the wick so the tip rests on the rim, and light the tip. Keep lit diyas on a stable, heat-safe surface and away from curtains and dupattas.
Diwali in the UAE
Diwali in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ajman is mostly celebrated in flats and villas rather than open courtyards, which changes what you actually need. Balcony railings, window ledges and the corridor by the front door take the place of a compound wall, and most families here light between twelve and thirty diyas rather than a hundred.
That is why the ladder stops at 25. It is the number that fills a family home without leaving a box of unused clay in the store cupboard. Everything is held in stock in Ajman, so there is no waiting on an overseas shipment in the week before Diwali. The Set of 12 and the Set of 25 both clear our AED 30 free UAE delivery threshold.
Known across the community as mitti diya, agal vilakku, vilakku and deepam, this is the lamp that turns a flat into a home for five nights.
Frequently asked questions
How many diyas do I actually need for Diwali?
For a two bedroom flat, twelve is comfortable: the entrance, the pooja room, two windows and the balcony. For a villa or a family home where you want the staircase and the terrace lit as well, twenty five is the honest number.
Are wicks included?
Only with the Set of 25, which comes with a sealed pouch of 100 long kesar cotton wicks. The single, the Set of 6 and the Set of 12 are diyas alone. You can add a wick pouch to any order from our Rui Batti listing.
Do I need oil as well?
Yes. These are plain cotton wicks, not ghee batti, so they need mustard oil, sesame oil or ghee to burn. Please do not expect them to light on their own.
Why should I soak a clay diya before using it?
Unfired clay is porous and absorbs oil quickly. Two to three hours in water, then a full dry, seals it enough that the oil stays in the bowl and feeds the flame instead of the lamp.
Can I use them again next year?
Yes. Let them cool, wipe out the leftover oil with a dry cloth, and store them stacked with a sheet of paper between layers. Handled gently they last several seasons.
How big is each diya?
Roughly 6 cm across the mouth, which is the standard everyday size. It takes one wick and about a teaspoon of oil.
Is the painting food safe or will it come off?
The paint is decorative and sits on the outside of the bowl. It holds up to normal use and a gentle wipe. These are lamps rather than serving ware, so please do not use them for food.
