What is Sita Navami?

Sita Navami is the birth anniversary of Goddess Sita, the consort of Lord Rama and an embodiment of devotion, courage and quiet strength. In the Ramayana tradition she was found in a furrow of the earth by King Janaka of Mithila, which is why she is also called Janaki and Bhumija, the daughter of the earth.

The festival falls on the Navami of the bright fortnight of Vaishakha. Tradition says Sita appeared in the Pushya nakshatra, and the midday Madhyahna window is the main time for her puja. Many women fast and pray for the well-being of their families, and the day is also a good moment to reflect on the ideals of grace and resilience that Sita represents.

Sita Navami puja vidhi at home

The Madhyahna puja muhurat in Dubai is 10:56 AM to 1:36 PM on 14 May, with the middle of the window at 12:16 PM. The Navami tithi has already been running since the evening before, so the whole day is Sita Navami.

  1. Bathe early, wear clean clothes and clean the puja space.
  2. Place an image of Sita and Rama, or a Ram Darbar image, on a clean cloth.
  3. Light a ghee lamp and incense, and take a simple sankalp for the day.
  4. Offer flowers, chandan, kumkum, and for Sita a small set of shringar items such as bangles, bindi and sindoor.
  5. Offer fruit, kheer or sweets as naivedyam.
  6. Recite the Sita stuti or a few verses of the Ramayana, then finish with aarti and share the prasad.

Your family or community tradition always comes first. If you keep a fast, many families break it after the evening aarti.

Sita Navami in the UAE

Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ajman have many families who keep Sita Navami, often together with Ramayana path and satsang. Programmes vary each year, so ask your local group or temple for its plans. For temple locations, see our guide to Hindu temples in the UAE.

Friday is a short working day. Many UAE workplaces finish around midday on Friday, so the Madhyahna muhurat of 10:56 AM to 1:36 PM suits a morning puja before work or a quiet puja at home once you are back. Check your own schedule and plan a calm puja inside the window.

Offerings in a UAE home. Kheer, fruit and sweets are easy to prepare, and flowers are available at florists and Indian grocery stores across the Emirates.

Lamps in apartments. Use a small diya on a metal plate, keep it away from curtains, and check your building rules on open flames and incense.
