Kedar Gauri Vrat 2026: UAE Dates, Muhurat and 21-Day Vidhi

Kedar Gauri Vrat 2026 - Shiva and Gauri worship for the 21-day vrat ending on Diwali

Kedar Gauri Vrat 2026 begins on Monday, 19 October, the day of Durga Ashtami and Sandhi Puja, and ends 21 days later on Sunday, 8 November, the day of Diwali Amavasya and Lakshmi Puja. It is a South Indian vrat, kept most widely in Tamil Nadu, that honours Lord Shiva and Goddess Gauri together as one united energy.

For UAE devotees who grew up watching a grandmother tie a fresh thread and light a lamp every evening for these 21 days, this guide carries the 2026 Dubai dates, the vidhi as it is actually practised, and where each part of it can be observed away from home.

Kedar Gauri Vrat 2026 Date and Muhurat in Dubai

All timings below are for Dubai (GST), read from the Dubai panchang. Sharjah and Ajman run about a minute ahead of Dubai and Abu Dhabi about four minutes behind, so treat these as accurate to within a few minutes anywhere in the UAE.

Kedar Gauri Vrat begins Monday, 19 October 2026 (Durga Ashtami)
Kedar Gauri Vrat ends Sunday, 8 November 2026 (Diwali Amavasya)
Total vrat days 21
Ashtami Tithi begins 6:57 AM, 18 October
Ashtami Tithi ends 9:21 AM, 19 October
Amavasya Tithi begins 9:57 AM, 8 November
Amavasya Tithi ends 11:01 AM, 9 November
Sunrise / Sunset, 19 Oct 6:19 AM / 5:49 PM
Sunrise / Sunset, 8 Nov 6:31 AM / 5:35 PM

Both ends of the 21 days are anchored to a tithi present at sunrise. Ashtami is already running at sunrise on 19 October (it began the previous evening at 6:57 AM and only ends at 9:21 AM that morning), which is why South Indian tradition starts the vrat on the 19th rather than the 18th. The vrat then closes on 8 November, the day Amavasya itself falls and the same evening as Diwali Lakshmi Puja, tying Kedar Gauri Vrat to the festival that follows it every year.

UAE note In 2026 the last day of the vrat, 8 November, falls on a Sunday, part of the UAE weekend. That makes it easier than most years to keep the full evening Diwali Lakshmi Puja and the closing Kedar Gauri Vrat rites together without rushing home from work.

The Story Behind Kedar Gauri Vrat

The vrat is tied, in tradition, to the story of Bhringi Rishi, a sage devoted to Lord Shiva alone. When Bhringi circled the deity in worship while pointedly ignoring Goddess Parvati standing beside him, tradition holds that the Goddess merged her form into Shiva's to become Ardhanarishvara, the half-male, half-female form that makes it impossible to worship one without the other.

Kedar Gauri Vrat is observed, in that tradition, as a tribute to Gauri's own resolve to be inseparable from Shiva, and by extension to the Ardhanarishvara idea that the feminine and masculine divine are one whole, not two competing halves. Devotees who keep the vrat are, in effect, honouring both sides of that union with equal devotion for the full 21 days.

How Kedar Gauri Vrat Is Observed

Most families keep one of two versions of this vrat. In the full form, a devotee fasts and performs a short puja every one of the 21 days. In the more common form kept by working families, the fast and the main puja are done only on the final day, 8 November, while a lighter daily practice carries the 21 days in between.

The daily practice that gives the vrat its name is a knotted thread. A fresh Mauli or kalawa is taken on the opening day, and one knot is tied into it each evening while a short prayer to Shiva and Gauri is said, so that by the close of the vrat the thread carries all 21 knots. Many families also light a lamp before the Shiva-Gauri shrine each evening for the same 21 days.

On the closing day, the full puja is performed: the shrine is cleaned, Shiva and Gauri are offered kumkum, haldi, flowers and a simple naivedya, and the knotted thread from the 21 days is offered before being worn on the wrist or tied near the shrine. Because 8 November is also Diwali Lakshmi Puja in 2026, many families fold the Kedar Gauri closing rites into the same evening as their Lakshmi Puja, before or after the household's main Diwali worship.

Mantra

ॐ उमामहेश्वराभ्यां नमः

Om Umamaheshwarabhyam Namah

Salutations to Uma (Gauri) and Maheshwara (Shiva) together - a fitting daily chant while tying each knot, since it names the united form the vrat honours.

Why It Ends on Diwali

The link between Kedar Gauri Vrat and Diwali is not incidental. Both close on the same Amavasya, and both are, in tradition, occasions to seek the blessing of a united divine household - Shiva and Gauri in one, Lakshmi and Ganesh in the other - for the marital and domestic harmony of the home. Families who keep both observe Kedar Gauri Vrat's final rites first, then move into the evening's Lakshmi Puja, so the household shrine carries one continuous thread of worship from dusk onward rather than two separate events.

Observing Kedar Gauri Vrat in the UAE

The 21-day version is manageable for most households in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, since the daily knot and lamp take a few minutes each evening rather than a full puja. For families who cannot commit to all 21 evenings, keeping the thread and the fast for the opening day, 19 October, and the closing day, 8 November, while lighting a lamp on the evenings in between, is a widely accepted shorter form.

For readers observing the wider Navratri and Diwali season this year, our Navratri 2026 dates and colours guide covers Ghatasthapana through Vijayadashami, and our Durga Ashtami and Sandhi Puja guide has the full muhurat for the day Kedar Gauri Vrat opens.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does Kedar Gauri Vrat 2026 begin and end?

It begins Monday, 19 October 2026, Durga Ashtami, and ends Sunday, 8 November 2026, Diwali Amavasya - 21 days in total.

Is Kedar Gauri Vrat the same across India?

No. It is observed mainly in South India, especially Tamil Nadu, where it is also called Kedara Vratham or Kedareshwara Vratam. It is less commonly kept in North India.

Do I have to fast for all 21 days?

Not necessarily. Many families fast fully only on the opening and closing days and keep a lighter daily practice, the knotted thread and an evening lamp, on the days in between.

What is the significance of the 21 knots?

Each knot, tied on its own day with a short prayer, marks one day of the vrat. By the close of the 21 days the thread carries the full count and is offered or worn as a sign the vrat is complete.

Why does the vrat end on the same day as Diwali?

Both close on the Kartik Amavasya. In tradition, Kedar Gauri Vrat honours the union of Shiva and Gauri on the same night Lakshmi is welcomed into the home, so the two observances share a closing evening rather than colliding by chance.

Why do Indian websites show different dates?

Most Indian sources publish tithi timings for Indian cities in IST. Dubai's sunrise, sunset and tithi transitions run on GST, roughly 90 minutes behind IST, which occasionally shifts which calendar day a tithi is present at sunrise. Always check UAE-local timings for dates observed here.

Can I keep Kedar Gauri Vrat in the UAE without a temple nearby?

Yes. It is a home vrat. A clean shrine corner with a Shiva-Gauri image or murti, the daily thread and lamp, and the closing puja on 8 November are all that tradition asks for.

Where can I get the thread and puja items in the UAE?

Divine Sansar stocks Mauli sacred thread, kumkum, akhand diyas and murtis for the home shrine, with delivery across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the other Emirates.
