The month of Kartik is the most auspicious month of the followers of Sanatan Dharma. There are many Holi occasions in this month some of these auspicious moments are Karva Chauth, Ahoi Ashtami, Rama Ekadashi, Dhanteras, Narak Chaturdashi, Diwali Govardhan Puja, Bhai Dooj, Saubhagya Panchami, Chhath, Anwala Navami and lastly Dev Diwali that is Karthik Purnima.
Kartik amavasya has its own significance. Most importantly it is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi the Goddess of wealth. Those who worship Goddess Lakshmi in their homes by illuminating with diyas would be blessed with plenty of riches with the mighty grace of the goddess. They will not have any shortage of money in their life according to many spiritual references.
It is the festival of lights. Diwali is marked by four days of celebration which dazzles all with its Joy. Each of the four days in the festival of Diwali is separated by different traditions what remains true and constant is the celebration of life its enjoyment and a great sense of goodness.
On the first day of the festival, Narak Chaturdashi marks the conquering of the demon Naraka by Lord Sri Krishna and his wife Satyabhama. Amavasya the 2nd day of Deepavali marks the worship of mother Lakshmi when she is in her most when benevolent mode fulfilling the wishes of her devotees. It is also believed that on this day Rama returned to his people after 14 years of exile during which he fought and won a battle against the demons and the demon king Ravana. The third day is celebrated as Govardhan puja and the fourth day is referred to as Bhai dooj and on this day sisters invite their brothers to their homes. However, some traditions have made this festival of 5 days including trayodashi as Dhanteras dominated by the tradition of gambling and purchasing of new utensils. All the simple rituals of Diwali have a significance and story to tell. Homes are illuminated with lights and firecrackers fill with the sky as an expression of respect to the heavens for the attainment of health wealth knowledge peace and prosperity
Do’s for Diwali Laxmi Puja
- Place the idols in the order from left to right-Lord Ganesha, Laxmi ji, Lord Vishnu, Maa Saraswati and Maa Kali. Then place idols of Lakshman ji, Shree Ram, and Maa Sita. If you dont have all the Idols, Just keep Ganesh and Laxmi. Your Kalash with Nariyal will denote all the other idols.
- Always set the pooja area in the north-east direction and all members of the family should sit facing the north while doing pooja. Always fill the main Pooja Diya with Ghee. Diyas should be in count of 11, 21, 51
- Keep another ghee/mustard oil diya lit throughout the diwali night in the south-east corner of your home.
- Always arrange diyas in a group of four denoting Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Ganesha, Lord Kuber and Lord Indra.
- Make maximum use of the colors red. You can use red Diyas, candles, lights, bright bed sheets and red flowers.
- Always start Diwali Pooja with the worship of lord Ganesha who is worshiped as “Vighnaharta” in Indian tradition.
- You should worship your account books also, if maintained. They should be placed in front of the idol of Goddess Lakshmi, but a little towards the west.
- Goddess Lakshmi resides in a place where virtue, righteousness, truth and compassion prevail. Maintain cleanliness! Always keep your home clean. Never sleep at messy place.
- Maa Lakshmi likes peace and harmony. So prevent disputes between family members. Make a loving and peaceful environment at home.
- Perform the aarti to please goddess Lakshmi with your entire family.
Don’ts for Diwali Puja
- When choosing gifts for friends and relatives, don’t choose leather items, cutlery and crackers. If you want to gift any of these, accompany them with some sweets.
- Never taste food while you are cooking.
- Gambling should be avoided. Don’t play for money. Play for fun.
- Avoid Drinking and taking non-vegetarian food on Diwali.
- Don’t leave the pooja area unattended throughout the night to make sure that the diya remains lit. Keep on adding ghee to it as it gets finished up.
- Do not use too many candles. Use Diyas instead.
- Do not place that idol of Ganeshji in the worship area, which is not in a seated position and the one with right-sided trunk.
- Do not light crackers when the lakshmipujan is on or immediately after it.
- Do not clap while singing arti of Lakshmiji . A small bell can be used. Do not sing too loud as it is said that goddess Lakshmi abhors loud noise.
- Do not place goddess Lakshmi alone, without her constant companion lord Vishnu. If you dont have Vishnu Idol, Pyary to your Kalash with nariyal
