Thiruvonam, the main day of Onam, falls on Sunday, 12 September 2027 in Dubai and across the UAE. It is Kerala's harvest homecoming festival, marking the day the legendary king Mahabali is believed to return and visit every Malayali home. The wider Onam festivities run for ten days, opening with Atham day on Friday, 3 September 2027.
Onam 2027 UAE Dates: The Full Ten Days
Onam is fixed to the solar month of Chingam and the day the Thiruvonam Nakshatra prevails, not to a lunar tithi, so its date is read directly off the nakshatra calendar rather than reconstructed from sunrise. Checked for Dubai local time, the ten core days run as follows:
| Day | Nakshatra | Dubai Date |
|---|---|---|
| Onam Day 1 (Atthachamayam) | Atham | Friday, 3 September |
| Onam Day 5 (Vallam Kali begins) | Anizham | Tuesday, 7 September |
| Onam Day 7 (Onam Sadya begins) | Moolam | Thursday, 9 September |
| Onam Day 9 (First Onam) | Uthradam | Saturday, 11 September |
| Onam Day 10 (Thiruvonam, Second Onam) | Thiruvonam | Sunday, 12 September |
| Onam Day 11 (Third Onam) | Avittam | Monday, 13 September |
| Onam Day 12 (Fourth Onam) | Chathayam | Tuesday, 14 September |
Thiruvonam Nakshatra runs from 1:28 AM on 12 September to 4:34 AM on 13 September, Dubai time, and prevails through the Madhyahna (midday) of the 12th, which is what fixes Thiruvonam day itself. Sunrise on the 12th is 6:04 AM and sunset 6:27 PM.
These are UAE local timings, sourced for Dubai. This year the nakshatra window is wide enough that it covers Madhyahna comfortably in both Kerala and the UAE, so, unlike several other festivals on this site, there is no date shift between Indian and UAE listings for Thiruvonam 2027. Sharjah, Ajman and Abu Dhabi all share the same 12 September date.
Nakshatra start and end, sunrise and sunset, all set to UAE local time.
Onam in the UAE
Thiruvonam 2027 falls on a Sunday, which is a UAE weekend day, so families have the whole day free for the Onasadya feast and Pookalam without needing leave from work, unlike some of the weekday observances on this blog. Onam is not a public holiday in the UAE, so most of the visible celebration happens around it rather than on the exact date: Kerala associations and Malayali community halls in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi run Pookalam competitions, Onasadya lunches and Vallam Kali-themed cultural evenings on the nearest weekend, drawing families who cannot host the full spread at home. Banana leaves and the full 26-item Sadya thali are increasingly available to pre-order from Kerala restaurants across the UAE in the week of Onam.
The Story Behind Onam
Onam commemorates the homecoming of Mahabali, an Asura king remembered for his generosity and fair rule rather than for any wrongdoing. When the gods grew uneasy at his popularity, Lord Vishnu took the form of Vamana, a humble dwarf Brahmin, and asked Mahabali for as much land as he could cover in three strides. Mahabali agreed. Vamana then grew to cosmic size, covering the earth and sky in two strides, and Mahabali offered his own head for the third, sending him to rule the underworld. Moved by his humility, Vishnu granted Mahabali one wish: to return and visit his people once a year. That annual homecoming is Thiruvonam.
Vishnu's Vamana avatar is one of ten Dashavatara, and readers wanting the wider context of his forms can read our guide to the Trimurti of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.
Pookalam, Onasadya and the Rituals of Onam
Each morning of the ten days, households lay a Pookalam, a circular floral rangoli, at the entrance, adding a new ring of flowers daily until it peaks in size and colour on Thiruvonam morning. A rangoli board or stencil makes the geometry easier to keep even for a first attempt, and a fresh board can be reused every year. Homes are cleaned and decorated well ahead of Atham day, and a small vessel or idol representing Mahabali, called Onathappan, is placed near the Pookalam from around the ninth day.
The Onasadya, the grand vegetarian feast served on a banana leaf, is the centrepiece of Thiruvonam itself. A full Sadya carries around 26 dishes, from sambar and avial to the final payasam, eaten in a set order that starts at the top left corner of the leaf and works clockwise. For anyone setting up a home altar or puja corner before the day, our guide on the correct way to arrange puja items at home covers the basics.
Onam and Thiruvonam 2027 FAQs
When is Thiruvonam in 2027 in the UAE?
Sunday, 12 September 2027. The date holds across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ajman, since this year's Thiruvonam Nakshatra window covers midday comfortably at every UAE location.
What is the difference between Onam and Thiruvonam?
Onam is the full festival, spanning ten to twelve days from Atham day to the fourth Onam holiday. Thiruvonam is specifically the tenth and most important day, when the Thiruvonam Nakshatra prevails and Mahabali is believed to visit.
Why is Onam also linked to Pongal?
Onam and Pongal are separate festivals from different states celebrated around the same season, both marking a harvest, but they follow different calendars and rituals; Pongal follows the Tamil solar new year in mid-January, not the Chingam month that fixes Onam.
Is Onam a public holiday in the UAE?
No. Onam is not a UAE public holiday, so celebrations are usually held on the nearest weekend through community halls, Kerala associations and restaurants, alongside whatever families manage at home on the day itself.
What is a Pookalam and how long does it take to make?
A Pookalam is a circular floral rangoli laid at the entrance, built up daily from Atham day and completed on Thiruvonam morning. A simple household design can take under an hour with a rangoli board; the elaborate competition designs seen in Kerala take a full day with several people.
What is served at an Onasadya?
A traditional Onasadya is a vegetarian feast served on a banana leaf, with around 26 dishes including sambar, avial, thoran, pachadi, pickles and payasam, eaten in a set order and always finishing with the payasam.
Who is Mahabali and why does Onam honour him?
Mahabali was an Asura king known for generosity and just rule. Vishnu, in his Vamana avatar, sent him to the underworld but granted him an annual homecoming to visit his people, which is what Thiruvonam celebrates every year.
Do Malayali families in the UAE celebrate all ten days?
Most households keep it lighter than in Kerala, focusing on the Pookalam and the Onasadya around the Thiruvonam weekend, while community associations spread the cultural events, like Vallam Kali-themed evenings and Pulikali performances, across the surrounding week.
