How did Yogini Ekadashi come to be?
Hemamali, a gardener, and his lovely wife Visalakshi were said to have lived together in the tradition of Yogini Ekadashi. When Kuvera was the king of Alakapuri, Hemamali used to carry out his duties there.
The King consistently worshipped and offered prayers to the goddess Shiva since he was a devoted follower of the god. Fresh flowers from the Mansarovar Lake were collected by the gardener and offered to the King as a form of worship to Lord Shiva. Because of his excessive attraction to Visalakshi’s attractiveness, Hemamali once abandoned his work to spend time with his spouse.
Once a long while had passed, King Kuvera dispatched his guards to discover why Hemamali had not returned. The King was told by the guards that Hemamali was not doing his duty because he was too busy with his wife. The King, full of rage, called Hemamali to his court and cursed him to contract leprosy and lose his marriage.
Having to leave Alakapuri, Hemamali did. He used to wander the wilderness for a long time and was also afflicted with leprosy. Hemamali encountered Sage Markandeya one day while on the road. The sage advised him to do Yogini Ekadashi fasting and seek forgiveness from Lord Vishnu after hearing the tale of Hemamali.
As instructed by the Sage, Hemamali fasted on Yogini Ekadashi with great devotion and dedication and worshipped and prayed to Lord Vishnu. Hemamali was freed from the curse and regained his original appearance and physical health as a consequence. He had a wonderful life and was also reunited with his wife, Visalakshi.

Ekadashi Vrat Katha Yogini
In the ancient city of Alkapuri, there once resided a gardener by the name of Hem, who worked for King Kuber. His duty was to transport flowers from Mansarovar to honor Lord Shiva every day. He spent too much time with his wife one day, so he was a little late to deliver the flowers. He was running late for court. Kuber became enraged and cursed him to become a leper as a result. After being impacted by the curse, he roamed around until, he happily, arrived at Markandeya Rishi’s hermitage, or Ashram, one day. Rishi discovered the cause of his ailment by the use of his powers and instructed him to do out the Yogini Ekadashi Vrat. Hem’s leprosy ended and he found redemption as a result of the fast.
